The Supreme Court has refused to hear a man on death row's appeal for a DNA test on a murder weapon. Rodney Reed was convicted for the murder of Stacey Stites, but he says the belt that was used to strangle her was never tested for DNA and he accuses her fiance (former police officer Jimmy Fennell) of the murder. Fennell was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the kidnapping and sexual assault of a woman in his custody while he was a cop. During his time in prison, several of his fellow inmates claimed that Fennell confessed to killing Stacey Stites. Stites was white and Reed is Black. Inmates said Fennell was angry about an interracial affair between the 2 and bragged about the murder. Unless he's granted clemency or a pardon, the state of Texas will execute Rodney Reed without the world ever knowing whether it was his or Fennell's DNA on the murder weapon. This is so messed up.

I think this article and framing causes a lot of anger because if you’re college educated with two incomes this seems potentially attainable in some version of your future and you’d like to imagine that’s “making it.” The truth is though you’re not rich until you have real money in the bank. Assets, investments, millions above any debt you hold. Even most people making 500K a year as a couple won’t achieve wealth like that. The whole system is rigged against you building wealth like that. These people will pay like 40-50% of their income in taxes but the truly rich, asset rich, will essentially pay no taxes. So while these people are certainly better off than most, and I read the article they do not complain, it’s not insane they don’t see themselves as rich. An income can dissipate in a second. A merger, a downsize, it’s all gone. Diversified assets don’t disappear like that. So ultimately this article is stressful because it’s a reminder how out of reach true wealth actually is no matter how hard you work for almost everybody.

Absolutely right! I teach Cuban foreign policy in Africa. And my students are always surprised when I tell them that Cuba was the only country to defeat Apartheid South Africa militarily. Not once but twice (1975 & 1988), protecting Angola from occupation from Apartheid SA and playing big role in independence of Namibia. Just a reminder that DOGE failed at every possible level: * At the micro level, they misread, misled and straight up lied about many of the 'savings'. They'd announce '500m saved!' and it would be some contract where the money was 98% already spent and already wasn't being renewed. * At the macro level, they didn't impact spending at all. The government spent more in 2025 than 2024. * At the institutional level, they didn't even convince the GOP that deficits are a problem worth caring about. The GOP only signature bill in 2025 exploded the deficit by trillions of dollars. * At a personal level, Elon got run out of town with his tail between his legs. The most notable public facts about the Cracked Coders are that one of them was a mini-Hitler, one was called 'big balls', and none of them bothered to learn how the government actually works before they set it on fire. They gutted a bunch of important institutions, fired whole departments at random, decimated medical research funding, killed millions of people dependent on USAID, and still failed at every possible level.

8 billion people on earth. Maybe 300 of them are causing all the problems. And they convinced the rest of us to fight each other instead of stop it.
