Deanna Witkowski, Rochester International Jazz Festival, June 23, 2023 Pianist and composer Deanna Witkowski has been strongly influenced by a mentor she never met and a woman whose life hers has paralleled in remarkable ways. Featuring a set of music written and influenced by Mary Lou Williams, Witkowski opened the Rochester International Jazz Festival's club pass series on Friday at the Eastman School of Music's acoustically pristine Hatch Recital Hall. In a very personal, engaging, and exhilarating performance, Witkowski performed solo and with trumpeter and Eastman faculty member Clay Jenkins, who was part of her 2022 album Force of Nature. Witkowski demonstrated the range of Williams' compositions and provided historical and cultural backgrounds for the songs, as well as sharing an excerpt of her acclaimed biography Mary Lou Williams: Music for the Soul, explaining how her own adult conversion to Catholicism and her composition of sacred music had followed a similar path as Williams. Songs included selections from Force of Nature including the title track, written by Witkowski after first moving to her adopted home – and Williams' home – of Pittsburgh. Compositions by Williams not on the album featured the angular and quirky "Kool," and the 1946 "Waltz Boogie." Witkowski told the audience that Williams' music needed to be heard and more of her writing should be part of the jazz canon. With a force of nature like Witkowski as her advocate, perhaps that could come to pass.
