For athletic directors, front office executives, and organizational leaders, this is an important distinction to better support your coaches. Instead of asking, "Why isn’t this coach delivering?" A more effective question might be: "In what ways is the environment we’ve created actually supporting (or constraining) this coach’s growth and needs?" Performance is rarely just about the individual. More often, it’s a reflection of whether the system around them makes growth possible or simply demands survival.

The fastest way to destroy a culture is letting talent negotiate the standard.

Great coaches combine the best qualities of a player’s coach with the best qualities of a disciplinary coach. You don’t have to be either-or. You can be both positive and demanding at the same time.

Real coaching isn’t always comfortable, sometimes it’s correction, accountability, and hard conversations. Don’t confuse honesty with hate. The people pushing you the hardest often believe in you the most.

You can call it soft and ineffective if you want. I call it smart and impactful. The best coaches I’ve been around coach with intensity, honesty, accountability, and respect. They coach hard without treating people poorly. Funny how the players willing to take hard coaching, fight through adversity, and run through a wall for you usually aren’t the ones who feared you the most. They’re the ones who knew you believed in them, challenged them, respected them, and cared about them beyond the scoreboard. How you treat people multiplies… and eventually it comes back to you!

Every team has talent. But the teams that last have HERO’S. People who:

You can have the best curriculum, facilities & branding in the world…but without culture, none of it will last. Culture is how you treat people. Are you open-minded, compassionate, curious enough to listen & learn, and mature enough to understand stories different than your own?
