Bar Council Chair statement on contempt of court case Barrister Rajiv Menon KC has won an appeal on an important point of lack of jurisdiction. In a ruling on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal stopped Mr Menon's forthcoming case, saying there was no jurisdiction for the High Court to hear the case. But the senior judges left the option for the challenge to be resumed under correct procedural powers. Chair of the Bar Kirsty Brimelow KC said: “I have followed with concern this exceptional attempt to refer Rajiv Menon KC for contempt of court. A barrister has a duty to represent their clients fearlessly and judge-instigated contempt proceedings risk a chilling effect on the profession. The Court of Appeal judgment is welcomed, and it is hoped that this now is an end of this troubling episode."

Imagine this in any other context. Imagine your wife, mother or sister had been raped, and you had people on the internet demanding “pics or it didn’t happen”.

⛓️ Trump’s DHS has appointed former GEO Group executive David Venturella as acting ICE director, placing a longtime private prison industry figure in charge of the agency overseeing mass detentions and deportations. Venturella worked for private prison giant GEO Group from 2012 to 2023 as senior vice president of client relations and corporate development, then continued as a paid consultant through January 2025. The company currently holds more than $1 billion in ICE detention contracts, requiring a formal ethics waiver for Venturella to return to government service. He replaces outgoing acting ICE director Todd Lyons amid a broader DHS reshuffling after Trump fired former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem earlier this year. New DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has reportedly pushed a lower-profile enforcement strategy aimed at keeping DHS “out of the headlines” while continuing aggressive deportation operations. Lyons oversaw a major hiring surge and sweeping raids that sparked growing public outrage, including after ICE agents fatally shot two U.S. citizens during operations in Minneapolis. Venturella is a longtime immigration enforcement official who previously ran ICE’s Secure Communities program under both Bush and Obama, a system that used local jail databases to identify undocumented immigrants for deportation. Border czar Tom Homan also previously worked for GEO Group. 🎥 More background from @Channel5iveNews Andrew Callaghan with Washington Post journalist Douglas Mcmillan

The chair of Israel's investigative committee into rape on 10/7 by Hamas, @CochavElkayam, presents an old image of dead female Kurdish fighters as women sexually assaulted at the Nova music fest During a 11/12 talk for Harvard's Maimonides Society, Elkayam referred to "an image of a woman stripped from the waist down... photographed on the side of the Nova music festival" This image was originally published on the anonymous Hamas-Massacre website promoted by Israel's govt, but removed w/o acknowledgment after I demonstrated it was first published in 2022 and showed dead female Kurdish fighters Documentation here: x.com/maxblumenthal/…
