The end was written at the press conference. All he had to say was “he played the best combination available to give them a chance to beat a surging VCU team. We lost focus and didn’t deny the ball from their best player. I am disappointed for our players and university. We obviously did not meet expectations in this game or for the season.” His job still would have been at risk, but his demeanor was so far away from how Carolina comports itself that it was unrecoverable.

The final straw of the Hubert Davis era at North Carolina was a 90-minute segment that started with the Tar Heels blowing a 19-point lead over VCU and ending with an embarrassing press conference that sealed the coach's fate. 247sports.com/college/north-…

Or anyone. It is not the decision as much as it is the way we fumble through matters publicly squandering the Carolina reputation for doing things the right way. Mack excruciating firing all over again. Carolina North controversy. Bubba’s hapless representation on the tournament selection committee. The BB media clown show. Non revenue sports maintain the Carolina tradition. The rest is a mess. We are lost in the NIL forest whipped about by excessive pride and expectations. It is a like a juvenile reaction to realizing you are not the cool kid anymore and you compensate by spending lots of other people’s money.

One thing I think these alumni/former players/boosters need to understand. They are 100% entitled to an opinion, but they are not entitled to a decision. Life isn’t fair move on.

HC is responsible for roster, staff, development and execution. Resources were there. Executive malpractice, lack of adaptability and contentious public relations. Except for his connections to the university and his good character he would have been fired already like any other P&L leader that consistently misses his numbers.

@JessicaTarlov Ridiculous. Everyone knows the tantrum throwing child controls the classroom unless dealt with firmly. Dems are the party of spoiled children and bad behavior holding the nation hostage to bad policies and worse ideas.

Most cogent and factual summation of the issue to date. HC is responsible for roster, staff, development and execution. Resources were there. Executive malpractice, lack of adaptability and contentious public relations. Except for his connections to the university and his good character he would have been fired already like any other P&L leader that consistently misses his numbers.

Duke is the best team in college basketball at being in the right position to get 50/50 calls. They most often set the acceptable degree of physicality early in the game preempting the officials from setting those conditions after observing play. Officials first become reactive and then conditioned throughout an entire game. BL Duke consistently gets the benefit of the doubt even if not warranted. Next level coaching, always on the attack.

I’m so serious. This “duke whistle” myth: Do you think that every ref ever is in some secret conspiracy to give Duke fouls? Or… maybe… Duke is bigger and stronger. Riddle me that I guess

“The fatal attraction of the government is that it allows busybodies to impose decisions on others without paying any price themselves. That enables them to act as if there were no price, even when there are ruinous prices paid by others.” — Thomas Sowell

Brilliant analysis by a scholar of war. This is what many are missing in the debate over the war in Iran. This should also be read by every American. It should be mandatory reading by every General and Admiral and every elected and appointed official in the USG, as well as everyone in the media. In this essay, War Scholar @SpencerGuard argues that Carl Von Clausewitz, himself a master On War, remains the master of masters. He did not give us answers. He gave us a method. He argues, war remains a contest of wills. What has changed is how directly modern capabilities can strike the sources of that will. Those who believe an enemy can be defeated without cost misunderstand the nature of war. If the political objective is worth fighting for, the enemy will resist. The greatest danger, as Clausewitz warned, is misjudging success, pressing beyond its limits or declaring it too soon. Clausewitz’s warning is clear: success can produce failure. For a more complete understanding of what is at stake, please take time to listen or read (takes only a few minutes). God Bless America 🙏🏼🇺🇸

Perhaps this was the significant emotional event HD needed to realize his approach has to be adjusted. Adaptation is not in his DNA, nor was it in Roy’s, Bennett, or Wright. HD is decidedly old school in his thinking and stubborn to a fault. K chose better with Scheyer to continue the legacy, and Duke got in front of NIL early wirh its collective and a GM. Roy failed to develop a top notch successor and the program got comfortable as the college athletic world revolutionized. Do we love HD enough to keep him? Perhaps one more year as Carolina North plays out and the Bubba transition occurs. However every logical bone in my body says never reward or reinforce mediocrity. We have had that in football forever, most recently in continuing with Mack way beyond the expiration date.
