@MelSchwitz24677 @mercoglianos JFC… that’s the point! What CENTCOM says here makes sense, what Trump tweeted earlier (all ships) made no sense at all. 🤦‍♂️

@MelSchwitz24677 @mercoglianos Ok, maybe read it very slowly. The interdiction around the world is for ships that have (past tense) already paid the toll in the last few days, before this blockade of the strait begins. The relevant sections are even highlighted above for you!

@denali16 @mercoglianos Ok if it was EVERY ship, why does he single out ships that paid tolls? There would be no need to single them out if it was EVERY ship. Read it SLOWLY............

@MelSchwitz24677 @mercoglianos Try reading slowly. The blockade of the strait is any and all ships; the interdiction elsewhere around the world is for those who’ve paid the toll.

@fionaharvey Using North Sea gas actually reduces our carbon emissions versus importing LNG (gas conversion to LNG is hugely carbon emitting). North Sea gas: cheaper & tax revenues & jobs + more secure + greener

Is North Sea drilling panacea to oil crisis? Upsides tenuous: won’t lower prices, create lots of jobs or tax revenues; will create CO2+encourage other countries with much gas to burn it. Only makes sense if you ignore climate. Which makes it insane, really. theguardian.com/business/2026/…

@mikejharper @v_j_freeman Yes price benefit is small (unless was done in targeted way to benefit only most vulnerable). But it is more secure versus relying on shipping routes / wars of future. And far greener - LNG imports (the alternative) is horrendous for carbon emissions.

@v_j_freeman Bottom line: current analysis from the University of Oxford and LSE's Grantham Institute suggests that for consumers, the benefits would be minimal, likely reducing annual bills by only £16 to £82 even if all revenues were returned to households

As someone with many years involvement in the physical movement of natural gas around Europe from field to end customer the ignorance in this post physically pains me.
Zoe Gardner@ZoeJardiniere

It is blowing my mind how many people don’t seem able to grasp that oil & gas in the North Sea is not “ours” but was sold off to private companies who will trade it on the international market like any other fuel. We don’t get any kind of privileged access to this fuel.

@ejwwest @v_j_freeman But we have the right to tax those sales! Current tax rate on North Sea production profits is 78%! And using gas from the North Sea is actually far better for environment than relying on LNG imports (gas conversion to LNG is horrendous for carbon emissions).

@v_j_freeman This isn’t about how gas is extracted or physically moved, luv. It’s about who has the rights to sell it once it’s extracted. Unless the government proposes to commandeer the pipelines, ban exports, and set prices in the UK, it’s pretty irrelevant.

@ccurts2 @julianHjessop @ZoeJardiniere Yes that would be v small benefit, unless you were a recipient of targeted support from the taxes. Or the taxes could fund cheaper renewable source scheme builds. Or at the least would mean you have some gas to burn, rather than half our supply being easily threatened on ships!

@ccurts2 @julianHjessop @ZoeJardiniere Yes is odd. But local production would mean 1. we get the jobs and taxes; 2. more secure, rather than half of our gas coming as LNG from thousands of miles away; 3. Better for environment as gas conversion to LNG is horrendous for carbon emissions (our total emissions would fall)

@ccurts2 @julianHjessop @ZoeJardiniere Current trend is that by 2035, UK will only produce 25% of its own gas needs. If new fields exploited it would be 75%. Not perfect, but think how crazy world will be in next 10 years! Source see Ed Conway tweets / film on this.

@hegsadh @ShapoMelon @afneil Signatories would through the UN Security Council take action if Ukraine was attacked. In Feb 2025 the US was one of a tiny number of countries who voted with Russia to veto a UN resolution that condemned Russia’s actions and supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Telegraph: “Trump is strongly considering pulling out of NATO.” The US president can't simply pull the country out of NATO. A 2023 law requires approval from Congress (or 2/3 of the Senate) to withdraw, a safeguard passed largely due to concerns about Trump’s earlier threats to leave the alliance.

I keep hearing that Americans aren’t aware of Tourette’s. Not convinced. I remembered seeing an episode of LA Law about Tourette’s and I managed to find it. This is from 1991. So 25 years ago. Interestingly it uses the “n word” and the explains that the person can’t help it.
