The danger here is that you get into "jigsaw puzzle mode", where you figure out how terms fit together without any idea of what anything means. Relentlessly try to make the text concrete before you connect it with any other conversation or theme.
job@derridium

@zenahitz i think the most important thing is to get a sense of what conversations the text is participating in, what the stakes are, what are the implicit references, etc.

@philliplede Absolutely wrong. Christ suffered to secure for us eternal life, not to relieve us of earthly suffering. Quite literally the opposite - He demonstrated that earthly suffering is the WAY to eternal life.

Boomer perennialist theology is a bit naive, accommodationist, and morally undemanding, but it embodies the Christian spirit of humility and hospitality to the other. Whereas a Nietzchian vitalist pseudo-Christianity that idolizes strength and power is straight up antichrist shit

You lose my respect if you platform fascists. There is no "middle ground" between fascism and representative democracy. That's literally the biggest lesson of World War Two. It's naive to think that platforming fascists "exposes" them. It only legitimizes them to certain folks.

@micsolana There’s wisdom in the original system. Property owners had skin in the game. It’s a different economy now but the underlying principle is sound.

@beatmastermatt bro get a fucking grip. you're talking about "platforming" like it's 2015. You think fascists will go away if ignored?? these people are running our country now, they have cultural reach greater than that of liberals. we need to beat them on merit or we'll be destroyed.

The most progressive parents in the United States are giving their children the most traditional names. “People with options choose the safest [names] for their own children, while praising risk and novelty for everyone else,” @robkhenderson says. “In my journey from foster care to Yale, I coined a term for this pattern: luxury beliefs.” 🔗 Read more about what the latest data on baby names says about progressives: wapo.st/4vWXtZo

Adorno does not simply say that an artwork is “autonomous” and “fait social,” as almost all note, but that this double character is “reproduced on the level of autonomy.”

No. The reason that reading philosophy is difficult is that philosophy is difficult. When you "bounce off" a dense philosophical text, you need to read it again, slowly. Look for parts that make more sense than others-- they serve as beachheads. Talk about it with a friend.
Henry Shevlin@dioscuri

Something I wish I’d been told at 19: when you bounce off a dense philosophical text, the reason is rarely that you’re being dumb. Far more often, the author is simply really bad at explaining.

@calvinrobinson The essence of post-Temple Judaism is envy: Envy of the Sacrifice of Jesus, of the true religion of God. So their plan always remains the same: Take away the sacrifice, render the Catholics impotent with God like us. And the Novus Ordo and protestantism did just that.

there is no "white" culture. there are the national cultures of white European countries, and there is the "western culture" that partly subsumes them -- but this latter has its roots in a Judeo-Roman synthesis, i.e. two groups recognized as non-white before the 20th century
