@SolarInMASS @FINITEkevin @jdmoran CA utilities have a demand response program, which can be seen as part of a VPP. In general, there hasn't much VPP adoption in CA yet due to lower incentive rates. Swell has done a lot with VPPs in Hawaii and is expanding in CA. Plenty of other players in Puerto Rico too

@FINITEkevin @jdmoran That’s a cool list, and the two columns of data are nice - but I’d be more interested in number of participants. For instance, how large is the Tesla VPP in CA? Sunrun and Sunnova both have extensive VPP participation, but it’s with their fleet. It’s not unique, just the largest.

Key statement - “investments made by customers” to build the grid. Most powerful grid upgrade potential. Need to get regular people, not just national solar companies, into VPPs.
John Farrell ☀️🌬🔋@johnffarrell

"That is correct." Utility admits that "Investments made by [customers] with their own money [e.g. solar] may supplant investments that the utility may otherwise have been able to...earn a return on, for the benefit of their shareholders." vist.ly/yffr #monopoly

@chrisxmunn What an incredible clip. Amazing that he was able to distill the complexities of discriminatory economic policies into a rousing ~1min delivery. Even today, many people would still be fearful of ideas like this. We have a long way to go...

@308Greenfield @twallyweb That's right! Certain states have a program to pay you for your production from solar (in IL 1 REC = 1 MWh). Some states/utilities (like CA) also offer cash rebates for batteries. Usually there are also bonus adders for sites in disadvantaged/low-income areas

If I’m understanding this correctly: I can pay ~$200,000 for solar panels for my opportunity zone project: Have a federal 30% tax credit for $60k. A state tax credit of $20k Depreciate $170k in the first year through the bonus depreciation Then add $13.5k of NOI to my property while using attractive financing not recapture any of that depreciation if I hold for 10 years And get better terms from banks for the CRA credits and renewable energy? Nice!

Americans can now receive a direct tax credit on a qualifying new or used electric vehicle at participating dealers. This means Americans have the opportunity to save up to $7,500 instantly on an EV. energy.gov/save/drivers

@SolarInMASS I hope so too!! We've been seeing the same thing across all project types - even small resi - and 1MW+ is backlogged for years in CA

@Sammy_Roth Could've generated a lot more in payroll/income taxes if they hadn't let the utilities kill over 17,000 jobs

"Newsom’s appointees failed to consider significant “societal benefits” of rooftop solar - like resiliency benefits when solar can keep homes powered during outages and protect residents from fatal heat waves or reduced pollution from gas-fired plants in vulnerable communities"
Sammy Roth@Sammy_Roth

Why is Gov. Gavin Newsom — a supposed climate champion — standing by silently while his appointees take a wrecking ball to California's rooftop solar market? It’s complicated. But not as complicated as I used to think it was. My latest @latimes column: latimes.com/environment/ne…

Solar and wind are slated to generate MORE electricity than coal in 2024, which would be a first in U.S. history. America's clean energy transition will happen in our lifetimes and we will get our first glimpse of it next year. axios.com/2023/12/13/ele…

@bibelhausen Do you have a grasp on the volume of internal vs external emails? My team communicates via Slack 98% of the time, so that helps me keep emails as "external only". I know you've been struggling with getting some of the team to adopt new tech tho...

One of my goals over the next few months is to remove myself from 95% of my inbox. I think I’ll be able to get there having daily huddles with my assistant and not opening my email until late afternoon to respond to a smaller and smaller number of emails over time. Who has been successful at doing this? Any advice? Am I on the right track?

@Sammy_Roth @jeffsaintjohn Utilities are now announcing huge rate increases while effectively preventing homeowners, schools, farms, and small businesses from producing their own power. The CPUC has not held the utilities accountable in the least and is clearly not independent

Life tip for people in their 20's & 30's who want to get ahead. Manage where you get your dopamine hits from. Get them from productive activities. Hint - not sports betting. If you don't manage it you're at the mercy of those who will.

Installing a 680 kWh battery in New York. Battery is to capture the excess solar in a 250 kWac/744 kWdc installation and feed it into the grid after the sun starts to drop. Interconnection was limited to 250 kWac, but customer wanted more kWhs (and had special tax benefits).
