Medieval and early modern literature and history, friends, family, Bears, Cubs, "culture." Occasionally grumpy, but mostly nice.

@jemelehill Happy for that guy—he played like the worst ten minutes of his life then sent everyone home with that. Good for that dude.

No one is asking for this. It will make a good thing worse. So of course, it would be fitting that the NCAA wants to expand the tournament. Our decline era continues: nytimes.com/athletic/72405…

Previous scholars have argued that it is so over. In this paper, however, I posit that we are so back

@jasonwblakely Petrarch quotes this passage in his letter about climbing Mont Ventoux and uses it as the basis for an Augustine-esque conversion experience. Substantively and structurally inspiring!

“And men go abroad to admire the heights of mountains, the mighty waves of the sea, the broad tides of rivers, the compass of the ocean, and the circuits of the stars, yet pass over the mystery of themselves without a thought.” ― St. Augustine of Hippo, Confessions
Peter Sarris@peter_sarris

I have been re-reading Augustine’s ‘Confessions’ for the first time in c. 30 years. The first time I hated him: good on male friendship; interesting on Manichaeism, but otherwise a conceited monster with no real care for anyone other than ‘mummy’. On re-reading, I hate him more.

Pope Fiction The Biblical backlash to Don's Medieval musings has the president looking like someone turned his Diet Coke into Pepsi. And sending the gimp to Budapest to eat quarter pounders was a political bust. Maybe they should have sent the wolf. by Maureen Dowd

@ItsAndyRyan I'm generally a descriptivist rather than a prescriptivist, but the misuse of "literally" & "disinterested" does annoy me. "Disinterested" especially. We already have "uninterested", & we need a word to mean "disinterested", but now it's being ruined.

For language pedantry, my rule is whether a useful meaning is being lost. It's handy to have a term than means 'not figurative', so I bemoan 'literally' being applied to metaphors. But I ask defenders of 'decimate' – how often does anyone want to say 'one in ten men were killed'?
