2 of the interesting things @rallaf said: Al-Sharaa's still going to be President in 5 years, as people want peace, and he's the guy to bring it Syria's economic normalisation is dependent on Trump & MBS' relationship; if Trump goes or changes his mind, there's trouble ahead

On the anniversary of the Syrian revolution, it was great to listen to an insightful blend of personal testimony & history by two important Syrian voices, @rallaf and @HalaGorani, at the launch of Rime’s book It Started in Damascus at @frontlineclub, moderated by @FaisalAlYafai.

@dickgregory2011 I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to talk Richard, was happy to see you in the audience, but by the time I had finished signing books, the room was nearly empty. Thank you for being there.

@chitowngirl1982 @rallaf Rime also said the lack of transparency is a problem, also the lack of transitional justice She and Hala didn't go into the issues of the Coast and Suwayda, but she did say that the rpoblem in NE Syria was about a political organisation rather than "the Kurds"

@chitowngirl1982 Maybe there will be competitive national elections at some point, but I can't see the government holding them until they can be sure there is no threat of political divisions leading to coups, the way they did in the middle of the last century.

@dickgregory2011 Yeah. I think that some Syrian intellectuals are still expecting some sort of competitive fair presidential elections, which is unlikely. The sooner they reconcile that, the easier it'll be to go onto what can be done - local elections, parliamentary, independent courts, etc.

@dickgregory2011 @rallaf The Democrats are likely to impose new sanctions on Syria as long as things continue to professionalize with the army. But it behooves the STG to make allies among the Democrats. I believe that Slotkin is the one they are courting in the Senate.

@chitowngirl1982 @rallaf There were other issues, related to the way many Democrats saw Turkey as the enemy, and anyone Turkey supported in Syria as ISIS. Replicated by some like Laura Loomer, but it's good that Bob Menendez is gone as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

@dickgregory2011 @rallaf It would be harder under a Democrat to lift the initial sanctions because the GOP would accuse them of supporting terrorism but now they are lifted, they are unlikely to return. It was also AIPAC who was lobbying against the Caesar repeal and the holdout was Mast.

@zweilicht1985 @rallaf He changes his mind a lot Another two points Rime made: 10-15 years' worth of investment requires a knowledge of Syria's future stabilty that isn't there yet And the one you make above, Gulf countries might not have the same investment capital they had three weeks ago

@dickgregory2011 @rallaf About what should Trump change his mind? The least thing the US needs is another country sliding back to chaos in the Middle East. The important thing will be to attract investment. Hard with war everywhere in the region. Decisive will also be how the GCC come out of the war.

@chitowngirl1982 @rallaf The expectation that Democratic Presidents will be poor on Syria, because they want to be friendly to Iran, is still strong But partly the point is that is has taken quite a positive push by Trump's administration to lift sanctions; a Democrat might be inert
