@guywalters I pointed out that quote to a friend on the morning of 9/11 (from a chapter about maths and war in a popular maths book). An hour later, he rang up and told me to turn the TV on.

New Syria just gave the Kurds a preview of their political future: a managed parliamentary election of HTS-approved names, the women are missing, the actual Kurdish political rapresentation is sidelined, and the loyal nobodies get seats.

Which should be a major scandal, but when chemical weapons denial was de rigeur for many Western politicians when it came to Syria, as opposing Western intervention was their guiding star, other atrocities didn't even rate a mention. The far left and Greens have learned nothing.

#Syria: on this night 8 years ago, the town of Lataminah was struck by a Russian incendiary bombardment. Thermite burns at over 2,000°C - enough to melt steel. Video h/t @MahmodHamway.

@JacobALinker @hahussain And many many other stories of the incredible brutality of the late Assad regime. If you get into a pissing contest about how brutal it was, you really have taken a wrong direction in life.

@JacobALinker @hahussain Already in April 2011 this: 'I heard they put a young man in Dar'a into a refrigerator. While he was still alive. And when they pulled out his corpse, they found he had written with his own blood: "When they put me in here I was still alive send my love to my mother." '

@JacobALinker @hahussain There is much wrong with your tweet, but we can start with you mixing up Homs and Hama. Assad lost because the committed Muslims in Nusra/HTS never stopped fighting, not because Assad didn't murder insufficiently.

If Assad had cracked down as hard as the IRI did or his dad had at Homs, my guess is that the Syrian Civil War would have been very short or wouldn’t have happened at all though. Otherwise, a meaningful difference is that in Iran there weren’t military defections of the sort seen in Syria at the beginning. The Iranian regime proved more internally stable.

@Vertaris21 *"could have been" Also, not worried about the Turks being a malign influence, a point that could do with several paragraphs of subsidiary explanation.

Yeah, the problem is that Trotsky discovered that he was a military virtuoso when plunged into civil war. Twitter is full of people who read the story backwards and think that there's a brilliant Red Napoleon lurking beneath their own lofty, self-important theorizing.
Woland 🇵🇸@stendhalist

Really can't help but admire Trotsky when pre-WW1 he was this café-going slightly effeminate and dandy nerd but in power was the ruthless organizer of the Red Army. Imagine you put this Twitter theory nerd in charge of an army but it turns out he's actually competent

Israeli support for the separatists in the province of Suwayda is a tactic that seemed like a good idea at the time, not a necessarily permanent feature. Israel isn't going to risk Israeli soldiers to fuck up an enemy not threatening it; without that, Suwayda is on its own.
