Adaptasi novelnya Andy Weir (The Martian) ini nyeritain seorang guru SMP bernama ̶R̶a̶h̶m̶a̶t̶ Grace yg tiba-tiba terbangun dalam kondisi amnesia di sebuah pesawat luar angkasa & perlahan menyadari dia dikirim buat misi nyelametin umat manusia dari kepunahan akibat matahari mulai meredup. Alih-alih sajikan kisah kepahlawanan bombastis, film lebih memilih bertutur santai yg juga berfokus ke perjalanan batin si tokoh utama yg belakangan ngerasa kesepian, nggak guna & gagal buat nyalain lagi spark dalam hidupnya yg belakangan meredup.
