When I was 18, I was convinced that evolutionary psychology and behavioral genetics were wrong. By chance I picked off The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker and thought I have found what I needed - strong arguments to disprove. Pinker convinced me that not only was I wrong but that these are some of the most incredible and interesting sciences in existence. Does anyone else have books or stories like this? Something that changed your entire worldview in one sweep?

@ZhenkeWu Ooh, thanks Zhenke! This is the exact sort of thing I was both curious about and fits with my intuition. I’ve definitely seen it a ton in my own area with new methods supporting “new” thinking, but the thinking is old, just had no way forward before. This is great!

I wonder why scientific fields, including psychology, revisit and "rediscover" certain topics over time, basically ignoring prior work. We can just be cynical and say people don't read enough or are purposely selling old wine in new bottles. But I don't think that's it. 1/2

The one thing I will never understand is that Republicans looked up to men like Mitt Romney, John McCain and Dick Cheney for so many years. They literally elected these men to represent them in the White House or run for the White House. They were the top choice of the majority of Republicans for so many years. Then Donald Trump came along and these Republican-idols suddenly become "Republicans in Name Only (RINOs)." I don't get it. Do you?

I’m 42 today. Not super excited about being squarely middle-aged, but emotionally it seems better than 32 and way better than 22. As research shows, uncertainty is aversive, and at least by now, you mostly know who you are and where you’re at.

@Oliver_S_Curry In the long run, yes…meanwhile, science is done by humans who have agendas, follow fads, get stuck in dead ends, and mistake new vocabulary for new ideas. To think it’s all progress is very charitable and optimistic.
