In the United Kingdom, we’ve managed to achieve communism for 95% of the population. If you have kids, unless you earn more than £80,000 gross, you have the same quality of life as those on benefits. And the government managed it without a revolution. Incredible really.

Born in the area and can trace his family tree back 200 years there Ex army, worked 6 years in the NHS and is now a plumber Andy went to Cambridge & is a career politician Let’s see how this one plays out

@Dominic2306 If they’d started construction in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham it may have been viewed as little differently. And also repurposed better when it went pear shaped.

Ironically, HS2 was never even popular with voters *in the north*, they wanted focus on fast local intra-north transport instead, and thought of hS2 as 'for London'. But the entire SW1 ecosystem is so crap at politics/communication they never figured this out in 20 years

Re #Makerfield Burnham is not local. He was neither born, raised or educated in Wigan or Makerfield. He was born in Liverpool and went to school in Warrington and St Helens. That's just a fact.

I am proud and humbled to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for Makerfield. These proud working-class communities represent the very best values of our country and they deserve so much better. It would be my honour to work for them every day, if elected as their MP, to achieve that. Many people here feel Westminster isn’t working for them and they are right. I am standing to change that and get the voice of these communities heard loud and clear. I am glad that this by-election has finally put the places that make up the Makerfield constituency into the national spotlight. They have been neglected by national politics for too long. It is a good thing that all political parties are now on the hook to tell the voters here what they are going to do for them. More than anything, people need life to be more affordable again. As Mayor, I have brought in changes which are helping, such as the £2 fare cap, free bus travel for our 16-18 year-olds and removing the 9.30am restriction from older and disabled people’s bus passes. But there is only so much I can do from Greater Manchester. If elected, I will have a relentless focus on reducing people’s everyday costs and bills and well as securing the investment these communities need. I have been an elected representative in Greater Manchester for 25 years. Throughout that time, I have fought for the people of the North West of England on so many fronts. I am now ready to bring the whole weight of that experience to fighting for the communities of the Makerfield constituency and would be privileged to be given that opportunity.

Makerfield was Andy Burnham’s back up plan. For Robert Kenyon, it’s his home. This battle will be David Vs Goliath.

@centre_right_ Makerfield was a strong mining area. Thatcher’s treatment of the miners will never be forgotten there.

I quite like Andy Burnham. But blaming Margaret Thatcher for northern problems is mental. Esp. when it was she and Tories who ignited Manchester’s renaissance.

Andy Burnham cannot be trusted. He is not interested in the people of Makerfield, he is simply using the area as a political stepping stone.

Nice to hear from you, Andy. Thanks for the by election. We live for such things. I’m in no doubt life is tough for lots of folk in Makerfield. But it’s hardly a poster child for urban squalor/deprivation. Thatcher left power in 1990. She was followed by seven years of unThatcher Major and 13 years of Labour government, of which you were a part. So it’s quite a stretch to blame her for any continuing woes. Unless we blame Labour for failing to put anything right. On the other hand the houses you were walking past were bought by the tenants under Thatcher’s right to buy scheme, which has given them some pride in place and some wealth they once could only have dreamt of accumulating. I assume your pledge to ‘renationalise housing’ does not include taking these homes back into public ownership ... even if that would constitute a proper, radical reversal of the Thatcherism you’re (some what bizarrely) campaigning against.

Burnham mentions Thatcher in his '40 years of failure' message and talks about deindustrialisation - but is this also an indictment of Blair/Brown era? Manufacturing jobs only stopped falling under Cameron...
