Data from Uganda shows excess mortality during COVID-19 especially among children under five.
Population cohorts like Iganga Mayuge HDSS of @Makerere were crucial in revealing these hidden impacts, filling gaps where routine data systems fall short.

Warren Buffet says goodbye in his final annual letter.
As he signed off, the following were final words of advice:
"One perhaps self-serving observation. I’m happy to say I feel better about the second half of my life than the first. My advice: Don’t beat yourself up over past mistakes – learn at least a little from them and move on. It is never too late to improve. Get the right heroes and copy them. You can start with Tom Murphy; he was the best.
Remember Alfred Nobel, later of Nobel Prize fame, who – reportedly – read his own obituary that was mistakenly printed when his brother died and a newspaper got mixed up. He was horrified at what he read and realized he should change his behavior.
Don’t count on a newsroom mix-up: Decide what you would like your obituary to say and live the life to deserve it.
Greatness does not come about through accumulating great amounts of money, great amounts of publicity or great power in government. When you help someone in any of thousands of ways, you help the world. Kindness is costless but also priceless. Whether you are religious or not, it’s hard to beat The Golden Rule as a guide to behavior.
I write this as one who has been thoughtless countless times and made many mistakes but also became very lucky in learning from some wonderful friends how to behave better (still a long way from perfect, however). Keep in mind that the cleaning lady is as much a human being as the Chairman."

Over the last two days, I’ve seen people viciously attack @wekesa_amos for his, frankly, correct views on Uganda’s tourism potential.
They’ve latched on his tweet about the gifts of nature that Uganda has to launch a proxy attack on the government, disguised as an attack on Amos’ views.
Bloody cowards can’t speak directly to the people who run the state. It’s not like they don’t know them. They do.
A lot of these are their relatives or their friends’ fathers and mums. They drink with them, party with them, they are their “gamba nogus”.
The man they are attacking has done more to broaden this country’s tax base than most of them would in 10 lifetimes but because they have a smartphone, a bit of data, some righteous anger and a litany of non-discerning cheerleaders they call “followers”, they’ll post some cringe stuff about a field they barely know, get cheered and somehow think they’ve advanced the cause of the country they say they love.
How about do what Amos has done? Go to a part of the country far removed from your own, get embraced by the people and embrace them back, then create an event that will bring hundreds of millions of dollars to the community long after you’re gone.
Spend countless hours on planes, marketing the area; lose precious family time doing this. See the number of available hotel rooms in this community double year on year. Teach people how to build synergies with your creation. Cheer for them and platform their ideas.
Try doing that! Do that in your chosen field then come diss the man for not knowing what he’s talking about.
Of course you won’t coz the bloody cowards in you can’t take these risks. You can only talk. The actual work is just a step too far.
Amos is a private citizen just like yourselves. He suffers the same pain of poor infrastructure, healthcare, governance etc as you do.
He just has chosen not to spend his waking days b!+ching about it and doing nothing else. He’s winning.
Try that too, you #OutrageMerchants instead of turning the man into your beast of burden.
