At a town hall in support of VA's gerrymandering proposal, left-wing podcaster Roland Martin tells Makola M. Abdullah, president of Virginia State University, "Publicly financed education in America is the creation of black folks." Abdullah replies, "You're absolutely right." He is, in fact, absolutely wrong. Publicly funded, mandatory schooling began in Massachusetts in the 1640s, hundreds of years before Reconstruction. New Hampshire began its first tax-funded school in 1649. Its statewide tax system for schools began around 1790. Connecticut first began using state funds for education in 1795. Rhode Island began its system for free public schools in 1828. Pennsylvania passed its "Free School Act" in 1834, decades before Reconstruction. New York established its public school system in 1812 and ultimately eliminated tuition fees for students in 1849.
