I actually did some research earlier. Texas A&M, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Vanderbilt, and Mississippi State weren't established when the Civil War broke out so they weren't involved.
LSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia all shut down during the war because large portions of the student body were fighting for the confederacy.
Alabama became a military institution to train confederate officers.
Mizzou was on the side of the Union.

Speaking of Thenns, Rickard Karstark is one of the most cursed men in the book series.
- Loose two of his sons.
- Executed.
- Last remaining son and heir captured by Lannisters.
- His brother declare for Stannis in the hopes that the Lannister will execute the true heir to Karhold.
- The same brother, Alys uncle tries to steal Karhold by marrying Alys to her cousin.
- Alys is married to a Wildling pagan who make Karhold their home (by none other than Ned Starks bastard).

The Thenns are so wildly different in the books it's not even funny. In the show they are just portrait as cannibals with shaved heads and scarification (ooh scary) but in the books they are the largest and most advanced Wildling society. They have actual lords and laws, making them more similar with the seven kingdoms than any other Wildling tribe. They are the only people who mainly speak the old language instead of common tongue, making them the only people who can communicate with the last giants (who speak no common tongue). They have their own metallurgy and live essentially in the bronze age with bronze age tools and weapons. Their king, the Magnar of Thenn is seen more as a God than a human and their warriors worship him and are ready to sacrifice themselves for him. That is why they are so feared by the rest of the Wildlings. It's a shame that the show left out lots of details like this because it left out how diverse westeros really is.
