Talking with ppl who are fine with using generative llms for writing and trying to explain why they should not be is one of the more disturbing experiences I've had. Like, what I am trying to say is that you as a person matter, and y'all keep saying "prove it to me."

@Raen4657 @ecutruin @suzania Sort of. You'd have to show that the guidance was specific enough to warrant copyright. You can't just describe the plot of a book (plots are not copyrightable) and have the LLM produce it.

@dmesg @ecutruin @suzania Sure they do. Even the overly-strict USCO would register an AI work given sufficient human guidance

@dmesg @celeriac @Strangeland_Elf I phoned my mamau asking for help because my biscuits weren't soft like hers. She said I needed her secret ingredient. I told her, "love won't fix my biscuits." She said, " The secret ingredient isn't love, it's lard." My biscuits are great now.

“Our grandparents were eating real food!” Not sure how old your grandparents are but I’m pretty sure a large portion of our grandparents were cooking everything in crisco and margarine.

@ecutruin @suzania though a human editor/arranger can, if she makes sufficiently creative contributions in the editing or arrangement, assert copyright over the result of *that*, much like a music producer who samples public domain audio.

@ecutruin @suzania The US Supreme Court has ruled earlier this month that the output of LLMs is not per se copyrightable. (Well, strictly, they declined to overturn the lower court in Thaler v Perlmutter.) The output of an LLM legally has no "author" and so cannot be copyrighted, (1/)

@ecutruin @suzania It deprives them of copyright protection for the output, for one. Writers should have legal ownership of their writings and LLMs don't give you that.

@suzania It'd be like telling a photographer that they should cease taking photos and paint their scenes by hand instead. The generative software is a tool that these individuals enjoy using in order to express what they wish to express. What exactly is wrong with them using it?

@_carmen_dioxide @CentristMadness He even wrote about this in The Audacity of Hope: people kept projecting whatever they wanted to see onto him despite his being absurdly cautious about committing to any policies even directionally.

@CentristMadness I was a campaign volunteer in 2008 and we were explicitly told not to talk about specific issues, policies, or the platform, but about how the campaign made us feel. The only actual policy he ever outlined was "more troops in Afghanistan".

@LyftLady11 @isaiah_bb He ran to the right of Hillary Clinton in the primary, in particular because she didn't want to increase the force level in Afghanistan and he did. She also wanted a universal healthcare plan and he ran against that.

@isaiah_bb Obama ran to the left of "war hawk" Clinton. He ran on ending Iraq War, normalizing relations with Cuba, AND famously vowed to negotiate with Iranians. Do NOT rewrite the 2008 primary, people. Plenty of us remember every detail of that campaign.

@isaiah_bb He ran to Hillary Clinton's right in the primaries and I don't understand why people are spending so much energy pretending otherwise.
