@dnharper @DPearsonPHL Actually ebikes are making "walkable" "city life" much more practical for kids (IMO from ages like 8-10 and up) in suburban areas. You see gangs of kids roaming around, riding to far locations when they need to.

If more people understood the lifestyle available for parents in places like South Philly, where I live, we'd have fewer posts like this. This neighborhood is great for people at all stages of life. People walk home from the bar and walk to swim class, school, soccer practice.
Conor Sen@conorsen

So much urban cultural discourse on here is just “I’m 27 and childless. I can’t possibly imagine being 40 and having kids. Fortunately I will never be 40 so I don’t have to think about it.”

@BruceBartlett It's called a manifesto, and it only worked because almost no one believed anyone would follow through with such radical proposals.

Say what you want about how evil Project 2025 was, but it was extremely effective. Democrats never prepare in advance. When they take power they reinvent the wheel on everything, waste the precious "honeymoon" period debating issues that should have been decided on day one.

The legacy of Mueller is if you do diligent methodical work on a damning report, trusting to institutions to do the right thing, damned liars will just tell damned lies about your work and the lies will stand, because institutions won't confront power and nobody does the reading.

@DPearsonPHL You can do all this on a bike here in Ardmore, or really any suburb not planned out after World War II.

My oldest is not far away from having the autonomy to do a bunch of things on her own. Places like the playground, the library, and the corner stores will be available to her even if she can't get one of us to take her. Suburban kids don't get this until 16, and it costs money.

Everything Price Sufferer (but especially eggs)
My favorite Robert Mueller story was when he released a comprehensive report concluding that Russia helped Trump win the election but Bill Barr said "nuh uh" and the media used that as proof the libs were hysterical.

When historians talk about Trump, this palpable sense of ineffectual underperformance among those entrusted with defending American interests will be key.
Wyfeknave🌹@wifeknave

@TNOQuoProQuid Robert Mueller is one of those figures like Merrick Garland that Democrats put faith into despite them just being incredibly feckless and stale individuals only concerned with upholding the status quo. Joe Biden was like this also in alot of ways.

@sleepyslim @smokefatsalt The place near where I used to live in South Jersey did fundraisers for the fire department every spring where they would do their magic on muskrat, raccoon, and squirrel. 10/10

The best BBQ always came from a run down shack with a smoking pit and a hand painted sign. Bonus points if there was a misspelling or backwards letter. The only things on the menu were brisket or pulled pork sandwiches, ribs, Brunswick stew, plain potato chips and sweet tea or Coke.

The saddest part about BBQ is it used to be poor people food. Used cheap cuts and slow smoked them till tender. Today it is more expensive than a typical steakhouse, charging $36/lb for brisket. Worst thing to happen to BBQ ever is it became popular. Now get off my lawn

@EvilKeaton I worked in a local hamburger restaurant around that time, and milkshakes were like $2.50-$3. This was before the premiumification of America, and the idea of some shake being almost twice the price of our already large, deluxe edition just seemed absurdly extravagant.

@cd_hooks Can an airline cancel a flight, refund everyone, and then reschedule a similar flight to depart two minutes later? I guarantee there's someone up in the Big Office running this exact idea past legal.

Sincere question: if jet fuel prices triple is there a chance airlines rescind tickets already sold for later in the year at a cheap price?

@royllovians This is why I tell people I'm descended from Charlesmagne, when every pre-1900 person I've been able to identify has been an illiterate peasant.

The actual truth, which people have repeatedly refused when I explain it, is that roughly 25–35 generations back, you are descended from ***every single*** person who was alive in your ancestors' entire region of the world so long as they have any surviving descendants today.
Wanderer@wood_eater_

"Your medieval ancestors were based warrior-pilled aristocrats" and "your medieval ancestors worked 18 hours a day and all died before 30" are both locked in an endless struggle to determine who got their brain the most fried up

@CameronCorduroy It's going to be wild in 15 years running into "Trump Republicans" much the same way we used to run into "Reagan Republicans" in the 2000s -- people whose ideological awakening happened during that era -- and it's going to look just like this.

@DrGryx @rushicrypto The economy of the 1920s was propped up with credit/loans issued in the boom times that turned out to be overvalued and uncollectable, which had a domino effect on the minimally regulated banks and the businesses that worked with them.

@rushicrypto This economy is entirely different than the economy in the 20s. This economy is falsely propped up by credit, rentals and subscription fees. The truth is this country collapsed probably more than 5 years ago now, and we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg now.

people misunderstand the icarus story. the problem was not that he flew too high. it's that the wings were made of beeswax, which offered very little resistance to heating. with modern materials he would have had no problems. we can fly as close to the sun as we want now

At a writers’ group, an older journalist mentioned that she used to write an article for $2,000 and live off of that (this was probably in the 70s-80s). She asked some freelancers what they make now, and she could not believe that the rates had stayed static or gone down.
traurigsten Muthes@mcmansionhell

I genuinely think writers over 40 don’t realize how bad things are for those younger than them. There’s a fundamental disconnect happening here in terms of not only rates but networking, practical knowledge, and things like housing costs and debt. Two ships passing in the night.
