According to Bloomberg, the Republic of Somaliland has offered the United States the opportunity to construct a naval base on its coast near the Bab al-Mandab Strait between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, as well as a critical rare earth-minerals deal, in exchange for its recognition as an independent country from Somalia. This comes amidst a push by the President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, for closer relations with Washington and the Trump Administration, who currently consider Somaliland as part of Somalia.

The United States has clearly stated: “Our intention is to ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all nations. Not just one, but all nations.” That policy must include Somalia — a country now facing growing external pressure to fragment for the benefit of outside interests.
