From Chatham House, London H.E.@Aynte , Chairman of Xaqsoor Party, today highlighted growing tensions between Somalia’s Federal Government (FGS) and opposition groups over upcoming elections and constitutional reforms — raising serious risks of instability and conflict. Key points shared: 🔹 Revisions to the 2012 provisional constitution remain deeply contested, particularly over universal suffrage and power-sharing arrangements between federal and regional authorities. Jubaland and Puntland have each suspended cooperation with the FGS at different points. 🔹 The new non agreed constitution, signed into law in March 2026, establishes five-year terms and extends the incumbent President mandate by one year although the President himself sweared numerous times that he will seek extension. 🔹 Opposition alliance Somali Future Council maintains the presidential term expired on 15 May, warning it may establish a parallel administration if no agreement is reached on elections or constitutional matters. 🔹 H.E. Aynte also raised serious concerns over ongoing land grabs and the arrest of activists across the capital. #Somalia #ChathamHouse #PoliticalUpdate #ConstitutionalReform #Elections2026

Wonderful to reconnect with @Aynte today @ChathamHouse to discuss developments in #Somalia 🇸🇴 As the original Presidential term expires, it’s imperative that negotiations between the Federal Government & opposition continue, to reach an agreed framework for the elections.

The sheer cruelty of the @HassanSMohamud’s administration is unparalleled. They forcibly removed this 👇🏾98-year-old grandmother from her home as part of their large scale land grabbing across #Mogadishu. She is among the estimated 300,000 of the most vulnerable residents whose properties were seized by the gov’t and sold to the highest bidder. Serious accountability is on the way. #Somalia

With all due respect Minister @AliOmarMP, Southwest election outcome is known, and the JSP party candidate, Aadan Madobe, is the winner. We can’t call it a ballot box; it is an engineered one. Elections are a way for people to show their frustration. Universal elections serve as a mechanism through which the people hold the government accountable, allowing ineffective policies and issues to be challenged. What would you say when Aadan madoobe gets 90% of the vote? The election could be a landslide (like the last UK election in 2024), could be predicted (based on credible outlets), or could be like the latest one in Somaliland, in which IRRO was elected and the incumbent president lost, but it was agreeable and acceptable by all stakeholders. The current administration came to power similarly, as it was agreeable and acceptable by all stakeholders. But I am going to engineer the election in a way that favors me, and I will use force. That way is known, and it is known where it is going to end. If you know the system, the current Somali structure, and that we have had four presidents none of whom could stay in power by force, why waste time, money, and lives in a way that is known to end badly?
Ali Omar@AliOmarMP

Somalia cannot be held hostage by those who fear the ballot box. facebook.com/share/r/1K37Qx… Not by manufactured chaos. Not by political pressure dressed up as constitutional concern. Not by the threat of crisis engineered to make democracy look harder than it is. The citizens queuing in Bardale didn’t wait for perfect conditions. They showed up anyway. The rest of Somalia deserves the same chance. Direct elections. Peaceful competition. The right of every Somali to choose their own leaders.

Excellencies @Aynte, @MohamedHRoble, and other distinguished dignitaries, thank you so much for standing with your fellow citizens against the corrupt regime of HSM, whose mandate ends on 15th May 2026 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Abdi Aynte@Aynte

Today, former PM @MohamedHRoble and I, together with other colleagues, have been blocked by security forces to go to the site of the planned peaceful demonstrations. This cowardly act has only strengthened our resolve to stop the industrial scale land grabbing and mass displacement of the poorest residents of #Mogadishu by President @HassanSMohamud’s administration. We will continue to protest until the mandate of his kleptocratic regime ends on 15 May. #Somalia

Minister: The so-called “election” you talk about is an elaborate fraud scheme designed to produce a predetermined result, because your party is both the judge and the jury. Everyone knows who will be “elected” in Southwest State. It’s a pipe dream for anyone to think they can stay beyond their constitutional 4-year-term and complain about “disruption”. Citizens have the right to demand a return to constitutional order. What you need to do is simple: (a) permanently stop the industrial scale land grabbing and mass displacement (b) agree with opposition a competitive, free and fair elections before 15 May (c) stop repressing media and youth.
Ali Omar@AliOmarMP

Somalia is witnessing two very different political realities. In South West State, the public mood is one of electioneering, competition, and democratic enthusiasm. For the first time, communities are seeing the promise of one person, one vote move from slogan to practice. Candidates are campaigning, citizens are engaging, and politics is being taken back to the people. facebook.com/share/v/1KZYP7… facebook.com/share/r/1AidgX… facebook.com/share/r/1Q4Snz… facebook.com/share/r/18YWPh… In Mogadishu, however, parts of the opposition appear determined to manufacture chaos in order to force the country backward into indirect elections. That is the real contrast: one side is mobilizing voters; the other is mobilizing disruption. One side is preparing for public choice; the other is trying to preserve elite selection. facebook.com/share/v/1L9fJS… facebook.com/share/v/18mqnT… Somalia cannot be held hostage by those who fear the ballot box. The way forward is not confusion, pressure, or political blackmail. The way forward is direct elections, peaceful competition, and the right of every Somali citizen to choose their leaders.

Journalism is not a crime. The arrest of three prominent journalists for reporting the industrial scale land grabbing in #Mogadishu is unconstitutional. We call on their unconditional and urgent release. #Somalia

My deepest condolences to the family of 3-year-old Musamil Yusuf Osman who was killed last night when land-grabbing military units attacked the Kordamac neighborhood in Dayniile District of #Mogadishu. My solidarity with the brave residents of Dayniile for defending their ancestral lands from the marauding militias sent by the most senior government officials. #Somalia

This video captures the scale of the looting of public lands in #Mogadishu and the systemic displacement of tens of thousands of people along the way. Most of the displaced are army veterans, current security forces and some of the poorest in the city. This will define the dark legacy of president @HassanSMohamud whose 4-year-mandate is expiring on 15 May 2026 #Somalia
