Somalia is witnessing two very different political realities. In South West State, the public mood is one of electioneering, competition, and democratic enthusiasm. For the first time, communities are seeing the promise of one person, one vote move from slogan to practice. Candidates are campaigning, citizens are engaging, and politics is being taken back to the people.

In Mogadishu, however, parts of the opposition appear determined to manufacture chaos in order to force the country backward into indirect elections. That is the real contrast: one side is mobilizing voters; the other is mobilizing disruption. One side is preparing for public choice; the other is trying to preserve elite selection.

Somalia cannot be held hostage by those who fear the ballot box. The way forward is not confusion, pressure, or political blackmail. The way forward is direct elections, peaceful competition, and the right of every Somali citizen to choose their leaders.
