Vaccines don’t “lower” your immune system. They activate it. You might feel run down for a day or two because of cytokines, but that’s immune activation, not immunosuppression. If you’re worried about your immune system “taking a hit,” you should be more worried about the infection than the vaccine. The vaccine is a controlled antigen exposure. Influenza is a systemic viral illness that can cause pneumonia, bacterial superinfection, respiratory failure, and death. The infection is the bigger immune stress test. The Cowling hypothesis about “temporary nonspecific immunity” was specifically about missing a short-lived innate boost that might follow natural infection, not about the vaccine suppressing anything. And overall illness rates in that study were not different between vaccinated and unvaccinated groups. The trade-off framing is also off. The Cowling and MoSAIC studies found short-term associations with common cold viruses, not serious infections. The vaccine provides 40-70% protection against hospitalization. Trading a possible cold for that protection is a trade-off most people would take.
