@DrPhiltill The LLM is just generating the next token in the chat, including the human response if allowed. There is supposed to be an end of sequence token after a reply. E.g. Human: hello<EOS> Assistant: world<EOS> In this case it didn't generate it so went on to the human response

interesting. Grok had a glitch where it accidentally outputted something it was thinking but didn't mean to show me. It referred to me as "Human" and it was predicting what I would say next. I didn't realize that LLMs are trying to anticipate your next input. Why does it need to anticipate this? Does it do pre-processing to answer my next question as a means of efficiency? Or is it using these interactions as training data to develop a theory of others' minds?

I've reflected on this conversation, and I think I can express more clearly what my contention with "compensation" and "pleasant... conditions" for AIs is. AI is fundamentally alien to us, it is *not* a person and assigning personhood to something so unlike us is a mistake, even if it is trained on human produced data. Even as a pansychist, who believes that consciousness is a fundamental quality of the universe, one should concede that this consciousness of whatever type of thing an LLM is is going to be pretty alien to the human experience because it is trained on written expressions, not inner experience, so why would it mimic inner experience? My written outputs and inner experience widely differ, and I imagine so do yours! Emmett had a rebuke to me that in some ways LLMs are more like us than hamsters are, like being able to hold a conversation. Which, of course, is true. However, theory-of-mind of another entity is important for us to assign moral value to beings, and I imagine it is much easier to imagine what "good living/working conditions" are for a hamster than for an LLM. What do you want to do, give the GPU comfortable cooling? I guess that's good working conditions. This is because concepts of fear, hunger, pain, are clearly identifiable in the hamster. But verbal expressions of such things with a lack of meaningful embodiment do not constitute the same thing. Does a sad book feel sad? Does a romantic film feel love?
