@brianstelter As a retired journalist with Newsweek, I compliment you on your criticism on the rampant overuse of the phrase “boots on the ground.” In addition to the human reason you cited, it’s just a terrible cliché. If I were editing a print publication, I would ban it.

@North2North @BarroomNetwork There you go! Wait, what about movie rights? Lol. Seriously, the next time a Gen Zer & or his agent want to trademark a nickname, do some research, honor some history. ( btw, you can’t give yourself a nickname. It has to be hung on you by your buddies whether you like it or not)

@megbasham No real journalist would have trouble making the distinction between “discovering this” (through rumor, hearsay, whatever) and getting the sourcing and corroboration to make it publishable. Which is a crucial difference between investigative journalism and clickbait opinion

I have no problem believing that Cesar Chavez was a sexual abuser. I have a very hard time believing that the legacy media just discovered this.

In 2008, he published a piece railing against the so-called New Left historians who were critical of presidents. His argument was that we didn't understand government and politics of the possible.

In Princeton NJ, where the median home costs $1 million, residents are fighting a plan for 238 apartments on the grounds of a former seminary. Leading the resistance: historian Sean Wilentz. "We are being accused of being racist," he said. @timcraigpost: wapo.st/4rBmPtC

@OutOfTheVines It also seems to suggest that as a Hulu Live subscriber I can get it at no extra cost and then dump my Marquee app subscription. Which I'd be happy to do.

Can someone explain the Prime thing to me like I’m 5 years old? I can subscribe directly to Marquee and use their app OR I can utilize my existing Prime membership to then… still subscribe to Marquee for the same price? I don’t really understand the point here.

@DaniellaMazzio I never measured the worth of my writing or the value of the experience by my rate per word. So much of that value was the writing process itself.

@tonywendice1954 though saying you're far more conservative hardly bolsters your case with those who loved his acting and are less conservative than either of you. (seems like a cranky vendetta.)

Sorry, folks, but I had personal experience dealing with Robert Duvall. I found him a pain in the ass to deal with. And I say th is as someone who is FAR more conservative than he ever was. This has nothing to do with politics.

Jack White explains why he doesn't write political music. "Well, when Dylan said the answer was blowing in the wind he didn't tell you what the answer was. I think a lot of people in the protest days were torn: you want to make a statement but the speaker can be chewed up and spat out. The search for hypocrisy becomes intense once somebody takes the podium and condemns somebody else. When it comes to the president, I know a lot about it so I feel comfortable saying it. But if I were to put it in artistic form, I don't think I would say those things directly. I wouldn’t say the names. I would make up a character." consequence.net/2026/03/jack-w…

@JoyceCarolOates I'm assuming this is in response to the journalism (the NYT in particular) rather than the biography itself. I'm not even sure I'll read it, but I'd be wary about passing judgement until/unless I do.

Joyce Carol Oates
Joyce Carol Oates@JoyceCarolOates·
there are some subjects who lead quiet, private lives; to make these lives interesting, biographers have to dig to find something/anything derogatory or controversial. frankly I cannot imagine why a biographer of Judy Blume, particularly one whom Judy Blume had helped immeasurably, would include details about her medical history. that they are fairly commonplace details makes it all the more absurd. if the subject had had the first heart transplant, yes--that would be newsworthy. when private details do not add anything to a biography there is no need for them.
Joyce Carol Oates@JoyceCarolOates

it's possible to be sympathetic with both subject & biographer. no one wants to read--or to write--a hagiography in which the subject is presented as a beacon of perfection; but the stereotypical goal of "warts & all" suggests a wish to diminish the subject through small, petty details. (are warts so very common? in fact, who has warts today?) in an effort to appear to be even-handed, a biographer may feel the need to include derogatory remarks about the subject provided by interviewees who are not even accurate, or excerpts from mean-spirited reviews of the kind all writers receive occasionally. how fair is this? details about Judy Blume's medical history should surely remain private. would the biographer feel comfortable with such details about his own life revealed?
