@toomuchistrue @elaifresh IF you’re a republican. If you’re a democrat and say something is so a great machine is set to work to deny it, reality be damned see: “vibecession”

fundamentally what's enabled trump to "wriggle out of it" again and again is that when you're president of the united states and say something is so, a great machine is immediately set to work bringing reality into, at the very least, a workable semblance of alignment with it

@davidlitt I guess that answers the question “given the horrific butterfly effect avalanche it caused, does the Obama administration ever wish they could go back in time to *not* roll that one little snowball down the hill” nope! woulda done it again! trump “turning red” was worth fascism

To quickly clarify: I wish I had written those jokes because they were amazing. But I’d only been at the wh for a few weeks - Lovett was still in charge of the dinner then. (I did watch from the cheap seats though, and the shade of red Trump turned was something.)
Stefan Smith@TheStefanSmith

You bolt awake at the White House. It’s April 30, 2011 and you are David Litt, Obama’s joke writer, and you’ve changed your mind. You won’t include any Trump jokes at that night’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

@DickNigma @EvilKeaton even more recently, in This Is The End: “I was thinking ‘how much taco bell could $20 possibly buy?’ the answer is infinite. Infinite taco bell” people don’t know how good we had it

Is it worth it? yeah, probably. but people who dismiss the risk of nuclear energy fucking terrify me

That’s the real risk. nuclear plants require tons of pro-science funding and constant attention, you can’t just turn it off and walk away. you’re betting your life that 100 years from now, there won’t have been a societal/economic collapse of any kind, or they fired everyone etc

it’s not the nuclear waste itself, it’s that a nuclear power plant requires our society to stay in its modern, technologically advanced state, with competent scientists and political leaders at the wheel, forever. remember when trump fired all the nuclear scientists? yeah.
Aiden Conartist@aidenconartist

This argument against nuclear is "Hypothetically in some distant future where society for some reason can't understand why this resource shouldn't be opened, it COULD cause catastrophe" while coal & fossil fuels actively destroys the world with a 100% climate catastrophe rate

The fact that young people talk about nuclear power and never, ever, EVER mention the nuclear waste that is buried all over USA in storage sites that will remain radioactive basically forever and aren’t secured or really “safe”

@ML_ennial @MorphingReality @aidenconartist go read Command and Control by Eric Schlosser, it’s about nuclear weapon near misses and it’ll absolutely fucking terrify you, the fact that a nuclear war hasn’t already happened by mistake is a miracle. We are so much more irresponsible with nukes than you could ever imagine

@BarbaraELester1 @153marcopolo I’ll die on the hill that (if titanic doesn’t count, no one ever counts it) it’s the wolf of wall street. he’s extraordinary. rich and low rent sleazy, a winner and a total loser, funny and awful, AND you buy a 40 year old man playing 22 in a way goodfellas could only dream of

not to be that guy but since we’re doing this (sigh) watch the scene where delta slim is talking about his friend who got lynched, but focus on stack and preacherboy’s faces. stack brings his memories of WWI wherever he goes, it’s an incredible but subtle- why am I even bothering

@SnoobularTubes @paularambles normally I would agree with you about contextless screenshots but “I AI generated a version of someone I was going to interview who declined” is just not one of those things where full context could possibly justify

@libshipwreck no one is using the phrase "you'll lose your jobs", it's online AI evangelists that are saying "people will lose their jobs". Of course no one is going to react positively to that.

The simplest explanation for the level of anti-AI sentiment at the present is that people are hearing the things AI company executives are saying and they don’t like what they’re hearing. It’s not the critics saying “you’ll lose your jobs” it’s the actual companies saying that!
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

I don’t think there’s ever been en a technology whose builders constantly promise that, if they succeed, tens of millions of jobs will be destroyed and the world might end.

@kyledxniel oh yeah one of my favorite parts of that book is when they’re describing the mile-long series of tunnels/hallways then the scale of the throne room being a psychological gambit to humble you and also definitely thought “I can’t wait to see what villeneuve does with this”

@DominicJPino “yes, an incredible amount of people may have suffered and died, but let me tell you: once they got their shit together and started a black market that turned into a fully capitalist system, things started to really improve!” Orwell wrote a pretty good book about this
