@etherallax Probably a very long time in my case! But worst case you can put the SSD in a system that supports TRIM and start over!

Can we add a 240 GB SSD to this Compaq LTE 5400 laptop from 1996 running Windows 95? Yes, yes we can, and it just got easier with a recent breakthrough! Let's talk about it in a 🧵 here!

@TheBobPony Yes, but you can typically just install the Windows 7 drivers on Windows Vista. Maybe not with the official installer because it checks the Windows version, but you can disable that check with Orca and it tends to work fine. You can also use a Windows 7 ISO&BCD with the Vista WIM

@dorianmuthig Only the 2008 and 2009 MacBook Air models supported Windows XP and Windows Vista by Apple's Bootcamp drivers. 2010 and newer don't officially support them. Also Intel Broadwell (aka 5th gen) supported Windows 7 as minimum. Ivy Bridge (aka 3rd gen) is the last to support Vista.

Windows Vista on 11 inch MacBook Air 2015 (MacBookAir7,1)! It’s janky but it “works”, requires using RDP as the internal display and external output doesn’t work. What works and doesn’t work: ✅ USB 3.x ✅ WiFi (using ASUS driver) ✅ Keyboard ✅ Battery level ✅ Apple SSD (256gb, gets detected as SATA) ❓Touchpad ❌ Bluetooth ❌ Intel HD Graphics 6000 driver (Internal and external output), black screen ❌ Built-in audio ❌ Sleep mode

Yo, @Apple why is the Screen Unknown Callers option not working since the last iOS update? I don’t want random marketing people be able to call me. The phone and my watch still ring (or rather, suddenly started ringing again, because it stopped working) with it set to Silence:

@AlfinCodes Not on the list. It was Z80 BASIC, then CP/M on some Siemens machine at a hospital, DOS 5.0 on a 286, and then that with Windows 3.0. All in the same year. I was 3 years old. I didn’t really do much. Some drawing/painting in Halo DPE was fanciful, I guess. I vividly remember. 😅

What’s with all these online services suddenly emailing me and asking me to sign in or deleting the account? This is asinine, stop it. It’s also not GDPR compliant. You may not delete a user’s account or the data they store in it without the user’s prior approval. The heck… 😬

@codewithpri I gotta say, between the issues I have in Windows or macOS, and the issues I have with Linux… the Linux issues are a hell of a lot easier and less time consuming to diagnose. This is on account of having source code available, no hiding of diagnostic messages, & fewer dumb users

@askaya They forgot a minor detail at the end of that headline. This should read “Straight men’s physiological stress response to seeing two men kissing is the same as seeing maggots *is to women*”. Seeing maggots is a lot less repulsive to men than it is to women. But I wager you knew.

“100 isn’t always 100 in tech, sometimes it’s 8× smaller than you think.” Let me explain: The difference between 100 MB/s and 100 Mb/s comes down to a subtle but critical detail: the meaning of “B” vs “b.” MB/s (megabytes per second) refers to data size being transferred Mb/s (megabits per second) refers to transfer rate at the bit level The relationship between them is fixed: 1 byte = 8 bits So: 100 MB/s = 800 Mb/s 100 Mb/s = 12.5 MB/s Same number, fundamentally different throughput. This distinction matters in real-world scenarios. Internet service providers typically advertise speeds in megabits per second (Mb/s), while operating systems and download managers display speeds in megabytes per second (MB/s). So if you’re on a 100 Mb/s connection, the maximum theoretical download speed you should expect is around 12.5 MB/s, not 100. It’s not misleading by definition but it does require technical awareness to interpret correctly. Isn’t it awesome how a single letter changes the scale entirely?.

How do I even notice, you ask? Well, whenever you mess with it, I experience latencies that are abnormal, and I will immediately want to know what’s causing it and go look for the problem… I need it to behave predictably. Anything that’s unexpectedly not as predicted is bad…

@WeebyRevy On some units the drive is broken. This allows pirating the games (because why else?) and not paying for optical media and having the entire official games library + homebrew titles at your fingertips. Removing a perfectly good drive? Yeah, I don’t really approve of that either.

Am I the only one who hates console mods that remove the disc drive? I see these for both the PS1 and Dreamcast a lot. Like... Why would you remove the ability to ever actually buy and play games in their native format on the original hardware? Surely there's other ways to play your collection of ISOs on the hardware...

@davepl1968 This is because the mechanics know these are easy and cheap to replace, readjusting takes more time in expensive labor, and if they replace it, they know you’ll come back again for a new one, and if they’re especially crafty, they’ll even sell the old one for a profit, too…
