There are two reasons this is an incredibly dumb move.
1. Bennett’s job was supposedly to draw disappointed ex-Likud voters. I was always skeptical about how many such voters he can draw, but whatever the number is, my bet is that few will swallow a united Bennett-*Lapid* slate. Lapid has never been and never claimed to be right-wing.
2. Polls show that most opposition voters want to see a “just-not-Bibi” coalition which, if necessary, relies on Arab parties. Most, but not all: a minority (mostly Bennett voters) prefer a unity coalition. These voters have now been told in very clear terms that their preferred outcome won’t happen.
Mergers are among most bizarre phenomena in Israeli politics. Their only use is for small and ideologically indistinguishable parties to survive the electoral threshold. In all other cases, they hurt the bloc.
The only time Lapid managed unseat Bibi was in 2021, when his party got barely more than half of Likud’s number seats, and there were no mergers in his bloc. In Israeli politics, the whole is usually les than the sum of its parts.

Bennett and Lapid are uniting.

@AnshelPfeffer Yesh Atid gets election funds based on its current size in the Knesset, which Bennett desires since his list gets none (its a new party with zero Knesset seats). Bennett's electorate also expects him to sit with Lapid in a government, so them joining changes nothing.

@petedwards @AmitSegal He’s rebranded himself as a liberal for the current elections. What he’ll do after them is a mystery.

@AmitSegal He’s already running on his own and will safely cross the threshold

@Jared_V__ @RealJessica If it was an average democrat I think she’d know who Biden was

@etherXwave No it's because most Christians are effectively pagans who worship three gods and practice idolatry. Muslims, despite all their barbarity, are still monotheistic iconoclasts which is biblically acceptable.

@nick_matau not so friendly reminder israel is commiting a genocide, no need to celebrate a country that enjoys war crimes that much

I thought they were the synagogue of Satan and "not to be trusted"
I guess @RealCandaceO never believed in anything she ever said, huh?

@wethepeople76_ @uricohenisrael Btw I would change the profile pic, JFK was the most Zionist president since Truman recognized Israel. Change it to the doorbell chud instead, it captures your likeness better.

@visegrad24 Why are Israelis being polled on American immigration policies?

@sfrantzman The Israel of Ben Gurion was 100x less powerful than the Israel of Netanyahu though. Warfare has also undergone fundamental changes since then.

The Israel of Ben-Gurion and Begin was very smart and pragmatic; it never tried to replace the Egyptian regime, it knew it was better to get to a deal through strength but also compromise. It didn’t let hubris dominate. It understood that peace at home was paramount.
Begin understood, too late, the failure of the misadventure in Lebanon, of getting sucked into trying to sort out another country.
Smart countries understand the limits of military force

@uricohenisrael These rats genuinely don’t know what’s coming for them. I kinda love that.

@Matiullahjan919 “The international community is well aware of Pakistan’s frontline role and sacrifices in the international community’s fight against terrorism.”
I’m surprised the Israeli ambassador didn’t keel over laughing when he said that.
English

@sfrantzman It's still considered an enemy country that Israel is in a state of war with.

Why is Syria coded red? Didn’t the Iran-backed Assad regime fall and Damascus is now run by a government that opposes Iran and is open to talks with Israel and also opposes Hezbollah?
Or does the red signify something other than the Iranian system?

@SpiritAbsolved @disclosetv If it is then why did Israel withdraw from Sinai in 1970s, Southern Lebanon in 2000, and Gaza in 2005?
