@HeTows Bennett’s electorate expects him to sit in a coalition without Likud. Why would him merging with Yesh Atid anger them, they already want this.

There are two reasons this is an incredibly dumb move. 1. Bennett’s job was supposedly to draw disappointed ex-Likud voters. I was always skeptical about how many such voters he can draw, but whatever the number is, my bet is that few will swallow a united Bennett-*Lapid* slate. Lapid has never been and never claimed to be right-wing. 2. Polls show that most opposition voters want to see a “just-not-Bibi” coalition which, if necessary, relies on Arab parties. Most, but not all: a minority (mostly Bennett voters) prefer a unity coalition. These voters have now been told in very clear terms that their preferred outcome won’t happen. Mergers are among most bizarre phenomena in Israeli politics. Their only use is for small and ideologically indistinguishable parties to survive the electoral threshold. In all other cases, they hurt the bloc. The only time Lapid managed unseat Bibi was in 2021, when his party got barely more than half of Likud’s number seats, and there were no mergers in his bloc. In Israeli politics, the whole is usually les than the sum of its parts.

@AnshelPfeffer Yesh Atid gets election funds based on its current size in the Knesset, which Bennett desires since his list gets none (its a new party with zero Knesset seats). Bennett's electorate also expects him to sit with Lapid in a government, so them joining changes nothing.

The 2 ex-PMs Bennett and Lapid just announced they’re merging their lists for the upcoming election. Conventional wisdom is the sum won’t be as large as the parts. Some of Bennett’s more right-wing fans can’t stomach a vote for Lapid and vice versa. So why are they doing it?

@etherXwave No it's because most Christians are effectively pagans who worship three gods and practice idolatry. Muslims, despite all their barbarity, are still monotheistic iconoclasts which is biblically acceptable.

Every single Israeli war since 1967 can be compared to putting out 99% of the fire and then waiting for the fire to spread again before starting to put it out again. Why does it keep happening? Who benefits from it?

The Israel of Ben-Gurion and Begin was very smart and pragmatic; it never tried to replace the Egyptian regime, it knew it was better to get to a deal through strength but also compromise. It didn’t let hubris dominate. It understood that peace at home was paramount. Begin understood, too late, the failure of the misadventure in Lebanon, of getting sucked into trying to sort out another country. Smart countries understand the limits of military force
