Dr. Godwin Iche, MD, MPH @dr_iche_ I strongly condemn the actions of some Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) personnel in Port Harcourt who were seen this morning blocking entrances to the flyovers, thereby causing unnecessary traffic obstruction and exposing motorists to grave danger. I witnessed this firsthand while driving to work this morning, I consider this act highly unprofessional, reckless, and unacceptable. Blocking access points on major flyovers can easily lead to confusion, sudden braking, collisions, and fatal road traffic accidents, thereby putting innocent lives at serious risk. Road safety agencies are expected to protect lives and ensure smooth traffic flow, not create hazardous situations that could result in avoidable loss of lives and property. I therefore call on the Rivers State Government to urgently call the affected officers to order and ensure that proper traffic management protocols are adhered to at all times. Traffic enforcement must be carried out with civility, professionalism, and consideration for public safety. The safety and wellbeing of the people must always come first.

I strongly and unequivocally condemn the unfortunate raid of a hospital in Akwa-Ibom State yesterday and the reported assault on Prof. Ekpe, a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon, one of the very few highly specialized experts in Nigeria. This development is totally unacceptable, unfortunate, and a dangerous precedent in a country already grappling with a severe shortage of medical personnel. Nigeria currently operates with an estimated doctor-to-patient ratio of about 1:10,000, far below the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation of 1 doctor to 600 patients. Acts of intimidation, harassment, and assault against healthcare professionals will only worsen the already alarming brain drain in the health sector, as more doctors may be forced to emigrate to countries where their safety, dignity, and professional contributions are better protected and appreciated. Healthcare workers dedicate their lives daily to saving lives under extremely difficult conditions and should never be subjected to humiliation, violence, or abuse while carrying out their lawful duties. I therefore call on the relevant authorities and security agencies to thoroughly investigate this incident, ensure justice is served, and take decisive steps to prevent any recurrence. The safety and protection of healthcare professionals must remain a national priority. Dr. Godwin C. Iche MD, MPH

If we are in a more serious country, this tweet ought to have gone viral.

NIGERIA HEALTH SECTOR CAN BE FIXED IN 2026. If all and sundry in the health sector of our nation are serious to start fixing our healthcare system, yes our healthcare system can be revived this year and set to an upward trajectory. My suggestions are simple: 1. NMA which is our biggest umbrella should collaborate with other health sector unions and draft a comprehensive recommendation on reviving the health sector in Nigeria. The challenges are obvious which ranges from poor remuneration, inadequate infrastructure in hospitals, lack of medical equipments, lack of basic welfare packages for health workers, insecurity, poor leadership and governance etc. 2. All healthcare stakeholders from across unions should call an emergency summit to come up with recommendations to address these challenges creapling our healthcare system and propose it to federal and state governments with stipulated timelines for implementation. If the government fails in implementation after the dealine, all health workers should stop work at all levels, this will plunge the nation into massive health sector crisis and solutions will come quicker. 3. We can also write to United States of America to come and help us in finding solutions to better our health sector, just like we are seeing recently that U.S President under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump is helping us fight and kill the ISIS Terrorist in Northwest region that have been killing innocent people over the years, especially Christians. The poor nature of our health sector has also gotten to that extent of seeking for help from United States. This is a HEALTH SECTOR EMERGENCY! If we can't fix our health sector by ourselves then it's not out of place to call for international help for the overhauling of our health sector. If any of the above is not done at this point, then we are going to keep complaining back and forth without achieving anything. Today, @nard_nigeria will go on strike and suspend after MoU signing with FG, tomorrow @JohesuNigeria will threaten strike, just on and on and the health system in Nigeria is sinking almost completely! Everyone should come together and revive our health sector. Yes we can do this. Share and Retweet until the above suggestions are looked into by all healthcare workers and implemented for the betterment of Nigerians and our nation at large. The best time to act is now. STAYING SAFE: FACTS ABOUT HANTAVIRUS. As a Community Medicine Physician, I wish to create public awareness concerning reports of confirmed cases of Hantavirus infection involving some United States and French nationals after leaving a cruise ship. According to reports from reputable global public health authorities including the World Health Organisation, there is presently no threat of a global outbreak or spread of the Hantavirus. However, public health awareness, surveillance, and preventive education remain very important. Hantavirus is a viral disease primarily transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents (e.g rats, mice), their urine, droppings, or saliva. In some rare strains (Andes strain), limited human-to-human transmission has been reported. Symptoms may include: • Fever • Headache • Muscle pains • Fatigue • Cough and difficulty breathing. Importantly, suspicious cases of Hantavirus infection or individuals experiencing symptoms after possible exposure should promptly present to the well-equipped Infectious Diseases Unit (IDU) of the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital for proper evaluation, testing, and expert medical care. Members of the public are advised to maintain proper environmental sanitation, avoid exposure to rodents and their droppings, and promptly report suspicious symptoms to healthcare facilities. I also respectfully call on the Federal Government of Nigeria, relevant health agencies, port health authorities, and border surveillance teams to intensify surveillance activities at our airports, seaports, and land borders, especially involving travelers arriving from the United States, France, and other countries where concerns about the virus have been reported. Nigerians are encouraged to obtain information concerning Hantavirus only from reliable public health authorities, and to avoid spreading panic, misinformation, or unverified reports on social media. Awareness and health education remain key pillars in the prevention and control of infectious diseases. Signed: Dr. Godwin C. Iche Resident Doctor, Department of Community Medicine, Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. 11th May, 2026

Fake news broadcasting, even among verified X users, is fast becoming a dangerous trend in our political space. Verification should stand for credibility, responsibility, and fact-checking — not the reckless spread of falsehood and propaganda. It is deeply unfortunate to see some persons falsely claiming that Governor Siminalayi Fubara “took a bow” yesterday at the Governorship screening, whereas he was not even present at the screening venue. What kind of politics is this? Must desperation and misinformation replace truth and integrity? Political differences should never justify deliberate falsehood. Nigerians deserve accurate information, not fabricated narratives designed to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension. This is a call for restraint, professionalism, and ethical conduct in political communication. Fake news is not best practice, and those involved must desist from this dangerous habit. Democracy thrives on truth, transparency, and healthy engagement — not manipulation and misinformation. ~ DrGCI

The incessant kidnapping of doctors and other healthcare workers in Nigeria is wicked, barbaric, and utterly condemnable. It is deeply troubling that individuals who dedicate their lives to saving others are now being hunted, abducted, and subjected to trauma by criminal elements across the country. The recent kidnapping of Dr. Edwin Emegakor, in Anambra State once again highlights the worsening insecurity confronting medical professionals in Nigeria. I strongly condemn this evil act and join my voice with well-meaning Nigerians, the medical community, and all lovers of humanity in demanding the immediate, unconditional, and safe release of every abducted doctor and healthcare worker currently in captivity. Doctors are not enemies of society; they are lifesavers, caregivers, and pillars of hope to countless patients and families. Subjecting them to kidnapping, intimidation, and violence is an attack on the nation’s healthcare system and a grave threat to public health. I call on the Federal Government, security agencies, and relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward securing hospitals, health workers, and all Nigerians. Enough is enough. The safety and welfare of healthcare professionals must be treated as a national priority. May every kidnapped doctor regain freedom safely, and may Nigeria overcome this disturbing wave of insecurity. ~ DrGCI

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) should join the World Health Organization (WHO) and the global health community in releasing public health advisories and creating widespread awareness about Hantavirus infection, especially with growing concerns that the Andes strain may possibly be transmitted from human to human. Public awareness and health education remain among the most effective tools for preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Nigerians deserve timely information on symptoms, preventive measures, rodent control, environmental hygiene, and when to seek medical attention. Disease prevention begins with awareness. Proactive sensitization today can help prevent panic, and save lives tomorrow. @NCDCgov

Awareness saves lives. 🦠 Hantavirus is a serious viral infection spread mainly through contact with infected rodents, their urine, droppings, or saliva. Early symptoms may look like common flu, but it can rapidly become life-threatening if not detected early. Keep your environment clean, avoid contact with rodents, and seek medical attention promptly when symptoms persist. Prevention and early diagnosis remain key. #Hantavirus #PublicHealth #HealthAwareness

My dear people of Rivers State, As we approach the upcoming Governorship election, I appeal to all of us, especially our frontline politicians and their supporters, to ensure the process is completely free of violence and bloodshed. Elections are a contest of ideas and visions for our state, not a battle that should claim lives or destroy property. At the end of the day, a governor will surely emerge. No matter how fiercely contested, only one person will be declared winner. Let us not destroy our beloved Rivers State or spill the blood of our brothers and sisters in the pursuit of power. The lives lost can never be regained, and the pain inflicted on families will linger long after the results are announced. I urge all political leaders and their followers to conduct this election with maturity and restraint. Let us campaign vigorously but peacefully, and accept the will of the people in good faith. I pray for a peaceful, credible, and transparent electoral process. May God guide our leaders, protect our youths, and grant us an election that reflects the true spirit of democracy. That is how democracy is supposed to be practiced — through peaceful competition, not through violence and intimidation. Let peace reign in Rivers State. #RiversPeacefulElection Dr. Godwin C. Iche (A concerned Rivers Doctor ✍️)
