The games that kids are playing are likely things like COD Warzone, which minimum requires a 6th gen i5. You're ignoring the fact that it's an anemic I3 processor, from 12 years ago, with an unsupported OS. The earliest supported i3 is an 8th gen.

You can try to make this sound like it's a great idea, but I've been in that industry for a lot of years, and it's buying a headache with an unsupported OS that may or may not work with a future update for that unsupported OS.
The kid would probably be happier with a used Xbox Series S, which is on eBay for the same 270 bucks.

Though I primarily buy games online, this is my concern as well.
There are times when you can find physical games significantly cheaper than online download ones especially during the holiday season. There never seems to be GREAT deals on downloadable games, just 'ok' deals.
The used market is an even bigger consideration.
