Many years ago I was a brand new baby nurse. We had a 700+ lb patient. His belly weight shifted when he rolled and fell off the side of the bed. It was a slow drip and the physics meant the rest of him was going down to the floor soon. He tried to hold on. My natural instincts kicked in. My 118 lb body tried to step in and push him back in bed. There were maybe 4 nurses there at this point. My boss physically pulled me back away from him. She said STOP!!! I was surprised. I said, “he’s going to fall!!!” She looked at me like I was insane. He fell. She said, “you almost got crushed under 800 lbs trying to be a hero. There was nothing you were going to do but get hurt.” That mean old woman saved my back. Queen.

@MoosemanNYC @NYDailyNews Bellevue Dr also deleted the tests the lung tests performed there. I would say she should Be fired for medical Malpractice for really bad behavior she shouldn’t be near any patient.

Child care that ends at 3 p.m. doesn't work for many working families. So we're changing it. This fall, our 2-K program will pilot year-round care for 2-year-olds, with a full 10-hour day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Because "universal" child care must meet the reality of working people's lives — covering the hours they commute, the hours they work, and the hours they need to build a future in this city.

@JuanBravo2026 @NYCMayor The trend of both parents needing to work is decades old. Once we figured out that 2 parents while paying for child care cost more than 1 parent staying home w/the kiddies. Times have changed. Now, most have 2-3 jobs bc of the nature of the work available. Children need care.

@NYCMayor Poor kids. No Mom or Dad for 50 hours a week and we wonder why they are a wreck. Don’t start with the “need two incomes” BS either. My wife and I moved 4 hours away and I worked 60 plus hours a week so she could a FT Mom. Our 30yo still hugs us and thanks us.

@VinoNStrosGal @cremer_mary Church or other smaller communities may help each other. I never saw it in school growing up. Mostly bullies who’d laugh at the unfortunate. The kids weren’t taught well by their parents.

I think you’re right about small communities and churches. Churches especially tend to rally around people who are suffering. What always stood out to me in school, though, was that it didn’t matter what anyone’s background was. Kids came from every religion, or no religion at all, and when a classmate got seriously sick the whole class got involved. Cards, visits, checking in, people just showed up.

Something I’ve always wondered about human nature. When we were kids and someone in our class got seriously sick, the entire class rallied around them. It didn’t matter who you were. Jock, cheerleader, artist, quiet kid. For a moment, the usual social lines disappeared. But somewhere between adolescence and adulthood, something changes. Because people living with chronic illness often find themselves incredibly alone. What happens to that instinct to rally around someone who’s suffering?

@VinoNStrosGal Good question. I have to laugh when the news person says “check in your elderly or disabled neighbors.” Never happens in my city. People fear us instead. Maybe they’ll get cooties. It’s a shame.
