Tonight, the Senate finally corrects a fifty-year mistake by passing the Social Security Fairness Act. Millions of retired teachers and firefighters and letter carriers and state and local workers have waited decades for this moment. No longer will public retirees see their hard-earned Social Security benefits robbed from them, thanks to this bill.

@erichoke But sadly, this is not the case with so many denominations’ seminaries. And for many pastors, the training was decades ago. I work with clients who have been “hurt by church”and an anecdotal trend I see is that insurance companies dictate the “clean up” of bad behaviors.

@bozlawpa I work (therapeutically) with women in this situation every single day. Another aspect is those pastors have typically groomed their congregations so that the whole community will blame the woman. There is no such thing as consensual sex with a pastor. His auth makes it abuse.

Pastor hires female client as church administrative assistant. Pastor uses this position to isolate the client and spend time alone with her. He works hard to gain her trust to the point where she opens up about past sexual abuse. Shortly thereafter, he suggests that he “counsel” her to help her “heal” from the past trauma. He has now maneuvered himself to be her pastor, employer and counselor (a very unhealthy and dangerous conflation). Over time, Pastor begins to sexualize this conflated relationship starting with words and ending with sexual contact all while claiming she is an equal co-participant in this “relationship”. The client is profoundly confused while also drowning in guilt and shame. She remains silent just as Pastor knew she would. This client has been sexually abused and re-traumatized by predator Pastor. Adult clergy abuse is an epidemic in the American Church that is decimating countless lives. Yet another reason why we sue pastors AND churches.
