@sdccampussafety I wish that HazingInfo.org wouldn’t misstate non-compliance. No Campus Hazing Transparency Report is not de facto proof of non-compliance. The law only requires a CHTR if there has been a hazing finding of responsibility in the past 6 months.

After losing their son Sam to fraternity hazing, this family turned tragedy into action with Sam’s Law and the Stop Campus Hazing Act. Must-read on why transparency matters for campus safety. channelinggrief.substack.com/p/stop-campus-…

@boazbaraktcs @TheZvi @sama @USWREMichael Profoundly un-American? You are aware that the Department of Defense had a mass surveillance program of anti-war and civil rights activists in the United States in the late 1960s?
English

1. The DoW is prohibited by law from engaging in any domestic mass surveillance, and @USWREMichael wrote that it would be profoundly un-American to do so, including for analyzing communication of Americans by purchasing data from commercial sources. Hence us and the DoW see eye to eye in our interpretation of domestic mass surveillance. They have no desire to do this, and we have no intention to allow it.
2. There are legal restrictions for publishing contracts with the DoW due to the classified nature of the work.
3. As you can imagine, our lawyers are quite good and they relied on internal advice as well as the advice of outside counsel. On consulting with Anthropic, US antitrust laws prohibit this kind of coordination, as much as we might wish otherwise.
4. The contract gives us the right to implement our full safety stack, which includes automatic classifiers and monitors. We will be working on the stack for this deployment over the coming months. Due to the classified nature of this deployment, only our cleared researchers and FDEs will have visibility into usage, which is why it is important we have them.
5. We believe our contract offers more robust safety guarantees. Note that Anthropic has disclosed that their national security model refuses less when engaging with classified information anthropic.com/news/claude-go…

@sama @apples_jimmy How does does caving so quickly de-escalate anything?
English

It was definitely rushed, and the optics don't look good.
We really wanted to de-escalate things, and we thought the deal on offer was good.
If we are right and this does lead to a de-escalation between the DoW and the industry, we will look like geniuses, and a company that took on a lot of pain to do things to help the industry.
If not, we will continue to be characterized as as rushed and uncareful.
I don't where it's going to land, but I have already seen promising signs.
I think a good relationship between the government and the companies developing this technology is critical over the next couple of years.

@meganzahneis @DavarianBaldwin This is a very important article for everyone in higher education to read! What happened at Tulsa on a grand scale is happening at a smaller scale at campuses across the country.

@dylanhenrich @glukianoff The courts have ruled repeatedly that the University of Pittsburgh is a state actor.
English

@glukianoff University of Pittsburgh is a private institution. If you oppose its values, you can petition the legislature to stop giving it money. But at the end of the day, private institutions should have the freedom to maintain their own values.

@usedgov Doesn’t your OCR resolution manual say 90 days—not 10 days?
English

ED’s Office for Civil Rights has found that George Mason University violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by unlawfully implementing DEI policies that intentionally discriminated on the basis of race in university practices.
GMU has 10 days to resolve these violations.

Today is my final day in office as President of UVA, and I’ve recorded a few thoughts in this video. Serving in this role has been the honor of a lifetime. youtu.be/ZW-dP8Yo9Gc?si…

I wonder if he included the numerous documents that he inappropriately downloaded in his application materials or waited until his interview.

Statement by ACE President Ted Mitchell on Federal Assistance Pause:
"We call on the Trump administration to rescind the memo issued by the White House Office of Management and Budget. This unprecedented order to pause grants, loans, and other direct federal support is causing great harm to millions of Americans, as well as our nation’s overall economy and security.
This is bad public policy, and it will have a direct impact on the funds that support students and research. The longer this goes on, the greater the damage will be."
