Between 2017 and 2024, as many as 19,135.6 acres of illegal poppy cultivation were destroyed across 12 districts in the state, with Kangpokpi district seeing the highest destruction at 4,454.4 acres, as per a report by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC). These destructions were successfully carried out under the direction of Shri N Biren Singh during his government. Today, widespread flooding has devastated Kangpokpi district, submerging homes, streets, and alleyways as a result of the poppy plantations. Poppy plantations, thriving on cleared forestland, disrupt water retention, exacerbating floods that flows down into the valley, impacting countless lives. The impact of deforestation and poppy cultivation ripples outward, bringing suffering to all of Manipur. The reckless clearing of forests for illicit crops, alongside charcoal production, has left the ecosystem vulnerable, intensifying flooding state-wide.
