With great sadness, we received information of the passing of Edith Eva Eger, an Auschwitz Survivor. Edith was born on 29 September 1927 in a Jewish family in Budapest. She was the youngest daughter of Lajos and Ilona Elefánt. She attended a gymnasium and took ballet lessons. She was a member of the Hungarian Olympic gymnastics team. In 1942, the Hungarian government enacted new anti-Jewish laws, and she was removed from the gymnastics team. In March 1944, after Nazi Germany installed a pro-German regime in Hungary, Edith Eger was forced to live in the Kassa (Košice) ghetto with her parents and her sister Magda. In May of that year, they were deported to Auschwitz. She was separated from her mother, who was murdered in a gas chamber. In November 1944, Edith and Magda were consigned to ammunition trains and slave labor. In May 1945, they were liberated from Gunskirchen - one of the subcamps of Mauthausen. After the war, Edith Eger moved to the United States. She became a psychologist and a specialist in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. Edith Eger was 98 years old.

The first parts introduce the German resettlement policy during World War II and the role of the Zamość region in its implementation. Both the process of expulsions and the history of the transit camp in Zamość are described. The main part shows the details of the fate of people from the Zamość region deported to Auschwitz. It includes the story of pregnant women and newborns and victims of medical experiments at the camp. See the lesson: lekcja.auschwitz.org/dep_zam_EN/ --- All lessons: lesson.auschwitz.org

📢 Why do the lessons of the past still matter today? In From Ashes to Lessons, Dr. Mehak Burza @drmehakburza , Program Coordinator, Online Global Initiatives, Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies, University of Texas at Dallas and ISGAP alumna, draws upon her extensive scholarly research to explore the enduring legacy of antisemitism, systematically tracing its historical roots and examining how it continues to shape our world. Through an incisive analysis of ideology, violence, and societal indifference, Burza challenges us to confront hatred head-on and ensure that history’s darkest chapters are not repeated. This is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the persistence of antisemitism and the urgent need for education and action. 🔗 Read the full essay here: athenaeumreview.org/essay/from-ash…

Ruins of gas chamber and crematorium III at the site of the former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp. Underground, there was an undressing space and a 210-square-meter gas chamber. Zyklon B was thrown through the holes in the ceiling into special wire mesh columns. The crematorium on the ground level, designed by the Topf und Söhne company from Erfurt, was equipped with five 3-muffle furnaces connected to one chimney. According to the producers, it could burn 1,440 corpses every 24 hours. On 20 January 1945 - 7 days before the liberation of the camp, the building was blown up by the SS to destroy the evidence of mass murder. (Photo: instagram.com/su_susibusi)
