@ViennaYachtClub In the Mission, there's visibly far fewer homeless camps than in 2022. But from 2024 to now, I can't say the picture is visibly different in my neighborhood. Still MANY people sleeping on the street, in doorways at night. Open-air drug markets still overwhelm BART station plazas.

It sounds like there's good reason to be skeptical of the sudden/dramatic shift in San Francisco's unsheltered homeless count
There's obviously many more homeless people on the streets at night. Mayor Lurie's admin changed the methodology to conduct the count in the morning

@KeithNHumphreys @hannahcwiley In the Mission, people regularly sleep in doorways or building alcoves. But they're usually gone by around sunrise, especially with city crews going around looking for encampments. The Mission after dark is a totally different picture.

@dustingardiner @hannahcwiley It's hard to see all of them in the dark though, so a daylight count should miss fewer of those who are on the street. Speaking as somebody who is in the most affected neighborhoods a lot, I don't see perfection but I do see significant progress in housing more people.

To put a finer point on this, many people who sleep in cars are gone in the morning. People who sleep in doorways and alcoves are often gone in the morning
