People's dislike of this book is suspect. Diamond gets a little lost in the weeds at time talking about things like how zebras can duck lassos, but the idea that agriculture only flourishes in some geographies and that not having horses is a big problem are obviously right.

Guns, Germs, and Steel is the book that historians love to hate, because they see it as some interloper from the biological sciences writing about stuff he knows nothing about. But for better or worse, that book is more influential than any recent work a historian has produced.

I’m having trouble understanding the complaint that the writers want to “justify” how Doctor Robby behaves. Is the preference that his behavior be unmotivated or not rooted in his character in some way? Is the problem that we’re asked to have sympathy?

@jailedamanda I'm not convinced there's been a change in fan behavior, but rather social media allows very small numbers of people to dominate the discourse on any subject that they are very committed to, and those people tend to be maladjusted weirdos.

at this point i've seen "reddit" used to describe not only every kind of political alignment but also every form of artistic expression. it's just shorthand for "something i feel superior to" now. whatever culture once denoted by the reddit slur no longer exists anyway.
