@willcritchlow I have positive associations with an “uphill battle” at least depending on the outcome!

Does it annoy anyone else that both uphill and downhill are bad in idiomatic English? How would you write “it’s been an uphill battle up to now but it’s all starting to go downhill” in a way that means things are getting better?

And now for something totally different... Some of you know that my wonderful talented wife @h_critchlow is an author. Her latest book, The Tomorrow Project, is out today in paperback and it's stunning. If you've read her previous crime podcaster books in the Cal Lovett series, this one's a bit different, but might be my favourite (shhh! I don't know if I'm allowed favourites). The Prime Minister is dying on the steps of no 10 Downing Street. The corridors of power lie empty... In its last days, the Government enacts the Tomorrow Project. A desperate plan to save humanity. Children are to be evacuated to camps in the countryside. Before the city falls, a woman smuggles out one last child. Ten years later... No one has come for them.

I personally know the teams at many large ecommerce businesses that each spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year on paid search advertising. It's common for these retailers with billions in online revenue to struggle to justify spending single digit millions on SEO. What makes it worse is they're not wrong. For too long SEO has been unable to justify significant spends because they've been unable to connect the spend to the results, or to answer the question "what would you do with another $1m?". Join me next week for a @SearchPilot webinar discussing why, and what to do about it (see below).

Does your career hang on organic search performance? On December 18th, SearchPilot CEO @willcritchlow is hosting a webinar about the challenge retailers and ecommerce businesses face when they try to take SEO as seriously as they take page search.

In the long run, we're really making two key strategic bets at SearchPilot that explain why, for example, a large ecommerce business like Marks and Spencer would partner with us: 1. SEO experimentation needs to be *easier* 2. SEO analysis needs to be *more powerful* Basically, teams need to be able to run more experiments more quickly, with less engineering and data science support, and they need to be able to understand the impact more precisely with more confidence. I've written a new post going into some detail on how we analyse test data, and, crucially, how we are investing R&D in dramatic improvements in accuracy, sensitivity, and confidence. Our benchmarking platform is a strategic bet that this kind of continuous improvement in our core capability is what keeps us at the cutting edge. If you want to see what power and precision looks like in SEO testing, drop me a line. [Of course, this is all subject to our mission-level bet that *proving the value of SEO* will turn out to be important for a lot of companies - I'm not counting that in "strategy" because that's more foundational!]

This research is🔥. Thank you @randfish. This underpins our thesis @SearchPilot - that search is the biggest channel *and* the least-well-understood channel for most large websites.

NEW research: sparktoro.com/blog/who-sends… The wait's over. Thanks to the amazing team @LiveDatos, we can finally answer questions about: - Who sends traffic to the open web (besides Google)? - How much? Where does it go? - What's changing?

I've started doing a weekly live video series in which I talk about all things SEO testing, do @SearchPilot announcements, and cover topical things. I've got a backlog of ideas, but also, AMA! You might want to ask about SEO generally, SEO testing specifically, business cases, statistics, reporting, executive buy-in...

I'm trying an experiment - live video chats. I just tried one that went out on LinkedIn and YouTube. I didn't tell anyone in advance because it was a bit of a tech test, but you can watch it back here: youtube.com/watch?v=KHlvey… All about user and usage data as ranking factor.

US folks, did you notice the 'new' Google sidebar for product-related searches? Well, our CTO, @TomAnthonySEO predicted this in Sept in a presentation. See sneaky slide peek below.
