@hreg15 Not quite - yes, Yahoo is a portal more than a search engine, but search market share figures from folks like Statcounter (or SimilarWeb/Datos/etc.) are counting searches, not just visits. I.E. they look at the URL string, so will exclude browsing behaviors.

the 35% yahoo number is the most interesting data point here and nobody's talking about it. that means 65% of yahoo visitors are there for email, finance, or news. they're not searching. the 'search engine market share' stats we've been using for 20 years are lying to us because they count visits not searches. this changes how you think about where to optimize.

97% of visitors to Google perform a search 56% of visitors to ChatGPT enter a prompt And only 35% of visitors to Yahoo perform a search Using this data (from last week's report), we updated SparkToro to better show which search & AI tools your audience uses 👇

We make audience research software. It tells you lots of things about any group of people on the web. But... it couldn't tell you how they used AI tools (prompts, topics)... until today 👇

Is Google taking news publishers' traffic away? Sweet mother of media, are they ever. From 2023-2025, referrals from search dropped by almost HALF. Brutal. Insulting. Infuriating. And ironic given that Google is certainly training its AI answers on publishers' work. 🙄

Key takeaways from tonight’s Ugly Talk NY: 1. AI recommendations are highly inconsistent. You’re likely to get the same list of products for the same query ~1 out of 100 times (@randfish’s study). Which means we’re optimizing for a “probability of visibility.”

If you're trying to: - grow your brand's presence in AI tools - get more press mentions - increase the likelihood you'll be in Google's instant answers - boost brand awareness among your audience Well... @alertmouse is free🔔🐭
Wil Reynolds@wilreynolds

Thought I'd analyze my @alertmouse data to see if it was just me or if my brand in listicles is growing after getting alerts for our brand in states, countries, and cities we don't exist in. Yup.

NEW research: sparktoro.com/blog/new-resea… If you give ChatGPT the same request for product recommendations 100X, will you ever get the same list twice? And what does that answer mean for folks who try to track their brand presence in AI tools? Finally, some real answers 🧐

So simple - do your research first to identify your audience and leverage AI as a tool through resources like @sparktoro. Don't think you can ask AI a question and get a magic answer. #MCO335
