Fellow Ugandans, especially the Bazzukulu. Greetings. How is the heat (empiita) of the akaanda (the dry season of January to half of March around the Equator) in the Kampala area? Encroaching on the wetlands must stop. Otherwise, the Ugandans will kwejusa (to regret, kwefuuza). Like I used to do in Dar-es-Salaam, I dare not take hot showers in Kampala because it becomes very uncomfortable. I take cold showers even at night in Nakasero. Fore-warned is fore-armed. We must protect the environment. On another occasion, I will, again, remind you of the months (ameezi) and seasons (eshumi) in Runyankore because they are more descriptive than the English ones.

This accomplishment also demonstrates the growing importance of partnerships and collaboration for health. As @WHO, we will not relent in pursuing our commitment to the triple elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B virus.

The Africa Health Workforce Investment Charter launched today in #Namibia represents our collective commitment to bolster health workforce. Quality health care requires strong investment in health workers. It's an investment to be nurtured, not a cost to be contained.

.@WHO is currently reshaping its work on stigma & discrimination, which remains the biggest barrier to access to #HIV prevention & treatment services. There are many good practices, but a consolidated, systematic approach is lacking.

"After 40 years of the #AIDS response, addressing HIV-related stigma & discrimination in health care needs innovation. We must move beyond capacity building for health workers & meaningfully involve communities to allow for a people-centered approach." Omar Syarif, @gnpplus

Today at #ICASA2023: Valuable insights on the 'New Guidelines on HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and STIs.' Key takeaway – prioritizing person-centered data is crucial for people who require long-term care so that they can be linked to TB, STIs, viral hepatitis & other healthcare services.

Currently 27 countries in the African region have pre-exposure prophylaxis #PrEP programmes & countries like South Africa, Kenya & Nigeria have successfully scaled up. But for young people & key populations, who would benefit the most from it, access to PrEP remains limited.
