Easter Bavelaw Farm
@easterbavelaw
A startup farm in the Pentland Hills. Graham and @beccibarr are returning this previously derelict farm to productivity with a flock of Easycare ewes.

@bankhousefarm01 @windshielfarm Having to deal with a late hatch of nemo here too, odd weather this year
English

@windshielfarm Ours were the same no worming bar hogg lambs on dirty grazing for nematodirus but have just had a very high worm count which has really effected lambs. Weather change from wet to dry has caused a real spike #scops

@edinhelp Overflowing fire damaged bins at Threipmuir reservoir car park could use some attention please

@niels_corfield What sort of adjuvant would you suggest for dung or slurry? Humid acid?
English

If the air is heady after application, probably means a carbon adjuvant is indicated

Cracking job from @benjaminjmiller transforming our moon surface driveway, highly recommended. Need to install speed bumps now!

English

@Ettrickgiles Baled our mss last year when I couldn't see the lambs any more! Silage analysed well and sheep loved it. Worry a bit about replacing p and K offtake though
English

What the hell do I do with this next paddock of MSS🤫#0utofcontrol Cut or graze!!!! Strip graze the preferred option I think.

@ThrimbyFarms @Ruralpay Took 9 months for us to get AECS capital payments we were owed out of them, chasing them every month, stressfull.
English

Has anyone any idea why the @Ruralpay is taking so long in dealing with applicants? We maybe stupidly have done 3k of fencing and 1.5k of planting on the word of mouth that we will get accepted in Mid Feb. It’s now Mid March, we have another 9k to do and roofs. £35k so far owed.

@RobHavard1 Excel for mac works here. Numbers pretty limited by comparison
English

@easterbavelaw @Ali_F_Baa @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie I knew that you don’t have cows .... yet...., but I might know someone who has some for sale😂
English

Second cycle tupping. Never too sure how hard to push ewes to eat down 40+ year old pasture like this. Ideally I'd like all the thatch and worm larvae eaten but don't want to starve ewes! Any thoughts? Thanks! @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie @eaziangus

English

@eaziangus @Ali_F_Baa @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie Thanks yes usually harrow in the spring, which helps the thatch. Suffering the effects now of poor grazing management earlier in the year, lambs don't really grow much when pushed to eat the old grass is the problem. Need some hairy cows!
English

@easterbavelaw @Ali_F_Baa @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie I try to give my ewes a decent bite of grass for 6 - 8 weeks after tups go in. There looks a good bite for sheep now but nothing is going to eat the thatch by choice. Presuming that you want grass here in the Spring have you thought grazing now and then harrow in early Spring?
English

@Ali_F_Baa @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie @eaziangus Yes, good point. Unfortunately round here any decent grass cover gets scalped by feral geese. Sadly they are not so keen on dethatching old pasture!
English

@easterbavelaw @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie @eaziangus depends on when your coming back ? im stopping at 4+cm and in areas where im looing to come back im leaving it higher.
English

@easterbavelaw @andrew_tullie @eaziangus The fresh stuff is fine but down in the bottom could have higher pathogen levels which might effect embryo implantation. Best to graze out that type of pasture with dry ewes post weaning. Then it should be better for now. Hope all is well

@SAYFCAGAFFAIRS A pleasure having you. Thanks for great questions, good chat and most of all for the very generous bottle of gin bothy 👍Enjoy your evening.

Massive thank you to Graham Barr for hosting a group to visit his woodland creation at Easter Bavelaw Farm. It was great to see and hear about the project from Graham, alongside Virginia Harden Scott and Mark Hamilton. #SAYFCAGRI #sellingscotland

Full of #germinalredstart and using it as a wind/sleet/snow break from the North, now that's a sensible 🐂😀
