Easter Bavelaw Farm

@easterbavelaw

A startup farm in the Pentland Hills. Graham and @beccibarr are returning this previously derelict farm to productivity with a flock of Easycare ewes.

@windshielfarm Ours were the same no worming bar hogg lambs on dirty grazing for nematodirus but have just had a very high worm count which has really effected lambs. Weather change from wet to dry has caused a real spike #scops

@Ettrickgiles Baled our mss last year when I couldn't see the lambs any more! Silage analysed well and sheep loved it. Worry a bit about replacing p and K offtake though

I’ve had an electric fence on footpath for 3 wks .2 wks ago I put signs up to warn . Somebody stop me today when I was moving the fence and said “ I didn’t know it was electric until you put the signs up “ he then said “ once I knew I couldn’t help myself ,WOW it’s powerful “🙈🙈

Has anyone any idea why the @Ruralpay is taking so long in dealing with applicants? We maybe stupidly have done 3k of fencing and 1.5k of planting on the word of mouth that we will get accepted in Mid Feb. It’s now Mid March, we have another 9k to do and roofs. £35k so far owed.

First day of 450m of hedge planting. Using wool from our own sheep as mulch, to hold moisture and suppress grass & weed competition without using glyphosate. We have spread that wool out, that was just the initial distribution. GS4 herbal leys on either side.

Second cycle tupping. Never too sure how hard to push ewes to eat down 40+ year old pasture like this. Ideally I'd like all the thatch and worm larvae eaten but don't want to starve ewes! Any thoughts? Thanks! @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie @eaziangus

@eaziangus @Ali_F_Baa @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie Thanks yes usually harrow in the spring, which helps the thatch. Suffering the effects now of poor grazing management earlier in the year, lambs don't really grow much when pushed to eat the old grass is the problem. Need some hairy cows!

@easterbavelaw @Ali_F_Baa @bankhousefarm01 @andrew_tullie I try to give my ewes a decent bite of grass for 6 - 8 weeks after tups go in. There looks a good bite for sheep now but nothing is going to eat the thatch by choice. Presuming that you want grass here in the Spring have you thought grazing now and then harrow in early Spring?

@easterbavelaw @andrew_tullie @eaziangus The fresh stuff is fine but down in the bottom could have higher pathogen levels which might effect embryo implantation. Best to graze out that type of pasture with dry ewes post weaning. Then it should be better for now. Hope all is well
