To celebrate the 43rd Anniversary to the Family Computer, here is a unique piece of history you may not have known: Nintendo’s president, Hiroshi reportedly called Nintendo engineer Masayuki Uemura (designer of the Famicom/NES) late one night after a few drinks in 1981, seemingly intoxicated, with the vague instruction to create a cartridge-based system for home arcade games like Donkey Kong. Uemura initially brushed it off as not serious—until Yamauchi followed up sober the next day. The Famicom was born from that “that thing we talked about” directive, and was designed in about two years.
