This morning I learned with great sadness that Dirk Kempthorne, my friend and political mentor, passed away last night.
Idaho is deeply indebted to Dirk for his many years of faithful service to this great state. His contributions are almost too numerous to list. Dirk served as Boise’s Mayor and Idaho’s Governor, and then served as a US Senator and eventually as US Interior Secretary. Dirk loved Idaho and always kept her well-being at the forefront of his efforts. Idaho’s transportation system was placed on a firm foundation when the GARVEE Bond funding mechanism was passed under his leadership. He was also instrumental in finalizing the Nez Perce Agreementwhich protects and preserves Idaho’s largest water resource, the great Snake River.
On a personal level, I owe a huge debt to Dirk for helping to launch my political career by appointing me to the Idaho House in 2000. I’m also grateful for the example he set as a person of integrity and faith. I well remember, early in my career, attending a critical water meeting which he was leading. Before starting the deliberations, Dirk asked those present to join him in praying for a good, solid, and equitable solution. He did so unabashedly and without pretense. He was not just a hearer of the word, but an authentic doer.
Dirk Kempthorne has left his mark on Idaho like few others, and his legacy of leadership and public service will be long remembered. Sarah and I extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to Patricia and their children. Thank you for sharing your beloved husband and father with all of Idaho.

Today marks one year since the passing of Chairman Raúl Grijalva.
He is forever one of the very best public servants in Arizona history. He was a fierce warrior for the people, the land, and the environment in Arizona. He was beloved by his colleagues for his grace, humbleness, and good humor.
I still miss seeing him on the House Floor.
