In the new year, we should leave old baggage behind. But the specious argument in this article with its offensive title, “The world economy’s biggest problem is Africa” reminiscent of The Economist’s “the Hopeless Continent”, needs to be tackled 🧵 1/ ft.com/content/178bdc…

A bit like the #COVID19 crisis showed us how even the most axiomatic truth: that viruses don’t respect borders, didn’t mean that the leaders of the world didn’t treat it as a national beggar-thy-neighbour issue. So if political vision won’t get us there, what will?

The Gulf states and Norway are examples of how state parties can break the resource curse and use resources for beneficiation. African countries are still politiking and mouthing intention without the action that puts them really in charge.

When resources are discovered in a location, it automatically becomes a mlitarized zone. Land defenders die daily depending their rights. This cannot exist with any development agenda.

Citizens have abandoned their duty to protect their sovereignty and allowing bad leadership to go on unchecked. The nature of citizenship we have produces the type of unaccountable leadership we see. - Prof Siphamandla Zondi @The_SARWatch #ResourceDiplomacy #ResourceGovernance
