@McFaul Actually, under the guidance of US economists, many of those former communist nations became hollowed out oligarchies with economies and population-wide health outcomes that still haven’t recovered from shock therapy.

Maybe. But right now, the dictatorships that were in place at the beginning of the second Trump administration are all in place now. All 3 places. A change in leaders is not a change in regime. In 1989, communist regimes became democratic regimes. But more drama to come.
Senator Ted Cruz@SenTedCruz

In the next 6 months, we could see new governments in Iran, Venezuela, and Cuba. If we end up with governments in those countries that want to be friends with America, that’d be the biggest geopolitical shift since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

@McFaul Again, I’m embarrassed that our nation was represented by you on the world stage.

@adamjohnsonCHI The longer one is on this site, and the more one interacts with people like Snyder, McFaul, etc., the more one realizes how absolutely braindead they are. The Politics&Prose book talk set!

@GranadosCeja Does the killing of El Mencho seem out of step with Sheinbaum’s approach generally? I feel like she has prioritized taking their legs out from under them economically/financially. Was this perhaps a move to keep US warmongers at bay? To show that Mexico is more than capable?

Given yesterday’s huge news, this is helpful piece for anyone looking to better understand the organized crime groups that operate in Mexico, the only thing I would add is that the killing of El Mencho buttresses Sheinbaum’s case that direct US intervention is unnecessary.

The killing of El Mencho, Mexico’s most wanted drug lord, won’t slow the cartels, reduce violence, or stop the flow of drugs. jacobin.com/2026/02/el-men…

@McFaul Ukraine is essentially as corrupt as Russia. The problem is your head is too far up your own ass. The entirety of your analysis is “Russia bad.” So, you’re unwilling to look critically at Ukraine in any way. Sachs is correct now and has been for years.

No one wants to end the war more than Zelenskyy. Sachs is completely out of his depth of expertise here. It’s like me popping off on quantum computing. Is anyone interested in my “opinions” on quantum? No. So why should anyone be interested in Sachs on Ukraine? He knows nothing.

@Timodc Eh, define “somewhat.” The right-wing Nazis want to do active harm to trans neighbors, and centrists are perfectly happy to hand them over if it means winning elections (which it doesn’t). They aren’t just polling; they’re excusing. Hasan seems correct from where I’m standing.

@GranadosCeja A truly insane thing to do: give the middle finger to your people and a friendly nation just to appease some senile, bloviating goon and his henchmen. I guess that’s the cost of doing business with Washington.

@MattLech I think it’s idiotic to flatten the purpose of unions to advancing worker interests to the detriment of the employer. Not surprised to see this take from Kelsey. Maybe Matt B has given up on trying to teach her anything 🤷‍♂️

@McFaul The problem is the US doesn’t have any real leverage over China anymore. Their economy is bigger, growing faster, and has superior autarchic capabilities. US influence continues to wane and China’s influence continues to grow. Not sure we have much ability to make demands.

@Timodc I don’t think Carville is problematic so much as he is useless. He hasn’t been meaningfully involved in a winning campaign since Clinton ‘92, which they only won because of Perot undermining Bush more. Still, he gets trotted out like some oracle. I prefer to listen to winners.

@Timodc Sohrab is fundamentally a reactionary. He was gaining some traction because of his embrace of New Deal programs and Christian social democracy. But then he got a little pushback and his gut impulse was to double down on authoritarian state violence. What an implosion.

Yes, this has been my experience with the vast majority of “Classical Education” campaigners/schools both on and offline. The few times I have interviewed with them, they’ve inevitably been more interested in whether I’ve read Dorothy Sayers and C. S. Lewis than how I would teach Homer or Vergil. Total cargo cult.

Adults advocating kids read the great books almost always have only the most superficial understanding of the great books They’re merely intoxicated with the sound of *saying* kids are reading the great books — b/c they’re so thoroughly bourgeois and bad readers themselves 1/2
