Like most recent movies, The Odyssey is whatever. I love movies that make me love the characters, to root for them or be sad with them, to FEEL. The Odyssey, like Oppenheimer, felt like an amalgamation of beautiful shots, with no emotional connection. Nolan can do so much better; Interstellar, Inception, his Batman trilogy, left me with a delightful bittersweet feeling afterwards, wanting to spend more time with the characters. The good old days were better in this sense at least.

Okay I got the new V2 version of the 🎧 3M Worktunes Connect (construction worker headphones with Bluethooth audio) Me and @rameerez are religious believers that passive noise cancelling is superior to active noise cancelling Passive noise cancelling are construction worker headphones, the ones from 3M that you wear when you're drilling through concrete Active noise cancelling are the headphones you know from Bose, Sony, Apple etc. Active noise cancelling relies on listening to your surroundings, then very very very rapidly producing the same sound but in inverse, but there's a predictive element to it, which means the sound that remains the same all the time (like airplane engine noise) is very easy to remove, but random sounds like voices, people moving around, etc. are close to impossible to predict for your headphone Which results in the funny thing many of us experienced in a plane: with noise cancelling headphones you hear MORE people talking than less, because it cuts the engine sound, but not talking Another issue I have is I want to be able to use noise cancelling headphones without any music or sound, my expectation is they should be able to kill most sound and give me silence in a loud place, but they don't. Airpods Pro don't, Airpods Pro Max don't, Sony WH don't, Bose don't. They simply can't due to physics But passive noise cancelling like 3M headphones don't need to predict anything, they just have a thick seal to cut sounds with their superior material, and they've protected construction workers for 75+ years The problem was always these didn't have sound though, but recently 3M started producing ones first with FM radio (lol) and now Bluetooth called 3M WorkTunes The previous WorkTunes V1 were good but it was micro-USB and I wasn't able to charge it properly I think because I'd use a micro-USB male to USB-C female plug and anyway it either didn't work or its battery just sucked Also the sound wasn't great, it was good enough for podcasts, but too tinny for listening music for a long time This new version absolutely you can listen music, I'd say 80% there in sound quality if you compare it to Airpods Pro 3 They have USB-C and a 40-hour (!) battery life, which is again because they're not doing complex active noise cancelling They work so well that I was sitting in a loud cafe and someone came up to me after my iPhone alarm was ringing and I couldn't hear it They're also much cheaper than Sony/Apple/Bose, they're just $69!

Hosted a dinner last night with a group of IT leaders of large enterprises around agent adoption in the enterprise. Some quick notes: * Change management remains one of the biggest topics for driving workflow transformation. Still most processes need to be upgraded to modern operating models to work with agents, which is a mix of technology, data, and human process change. Lots of emphasis on getting data (structured and unstructured) into a setup that can work with agents properly. * IT teams are finding increasing success embedding full engineers into the business functions (essentially internal FDE) that go and implement agents into the internal workflows. There’s so much technical work to be done to make agents successful, that they can accelerate months or quarters of failed experiments by having someone technical in the workflow early. * Consensus that the tech function is becoming more important than ever. It’s clear that the business could only expect automation to affect a minority of the business before (e.g. ERP) but now it can impact all of knowledge work. This means IT is becoming a more central role to the workflows across the company. * Workflows are cross functional, and getting agents to work cross functionally is a complicated data modeling and permissions issue. Single users don’t have access to this. Which means you need to have agentic systems take on their own roles and have their own privileges, which is non-trivial given agents can’t keep things secure on their own. * Huge variance in budgets between coding work and the rest of knowledge work. Some companies had a $1,000 a month budget for developers, and others had much higher amounts (like $5,000) that were merely triggers to notify the team vs. block them. Far smaller budgets for non-coding work at the moment. * More companies are building their own multimodel systems for routing workloads by task to frontier and lower cost models. Lots of energy around open weights models, but still more in experimentation instead of at scale usage (some companies can’t due to perceived Chinese issue). * Clear sense that all enterprise software must be headless in the future. Relief that they don’t need to train employees on hundreds of different apps. However, clear frustration with the traditional vendors that don’t play extremely nice (technically or cost wise) with agents in a headless fashion. Huge warning for existing software vendors. * Mythos or mythos level-models are finding more and more sophsiticated security risks. The chaining together of vulnerabilities is what’s novel right now, and companies are coming up with long backlogs of what they need to go patch quickly. Even more discussed, but just a few of the hottest topics.

Useful discovery of the day: it seems that frontier models are trained enough on my couple decades of open source work that I can just say "write a commit message in mitchellh style" without any further skills and it does pretty much the right thing. 😜

A lot to unpack here. Anthropic is burying some hard truths in careful political language. Some initial reads: 1) Anthropic verifies that none of the jailbreaks provided a capability beyond what many other models, including Chinese models, could do.
