@NickolaConagher if i were to rewatch all of dbz i would def do kai until buu arc and then rest on the og remastered funi dub. would also recommend the same. buu arc og dub had a mix of mostly experienced VAs, memorable moments, and accurate enough dialogue that make it worth watching tbh.

Another thing from the Funimation dub I like over Dragon Ball Z Kai. Gohan's reaction to the Z-Sword breaking. Cracks me up every time I hear it. Kai is still better though.

@maxl1am I’ve always thought that it’s because 9 psychologically feels like an intermediate step, simply on the way to 10. They (perhaps correctly) felt that many customers would plan to skip 9 and simply wait it out for 10 which would be perceived as the real major release.

These are one of the few scenes in DBZ where I prefer the OG dub. Not because of the voice acting but because of the dialogue and Goku trash talking. Goku, in no uncertain terms just flat out tells Vegeta he’s stronger than him and no amount of training is going to close the gap and Vegeta is just insecure as all hell. It’s brilliant. Vegeta always referred to Goku as a low class warrior and now that same low class is big leaguing him in front of everyone, even his own son. And he says it so casually because he knows he ain’t gonna step cause he can’t do anything about it. Full circle moment.

I think some part of it is that it would feel uncomfortable seeing a girl get beat up too badly - physically and figuratively the same way a male MC would be thrown to the wringer. So these girl MCs are kind of cushioned. They aren’t put through the wringer to the extent of their male counterparts.

Naturally she fails to understand the meaning of Mary Sue entirely. It does not mean "girl character", it means "perfect character who can do anything with no limitations". Luke Skywalker was a half decent pilot with a degree of natural ability with the Force that takes him years to develop. He isn't particularly good at anything else. From the very beginning of The Force Awakens, Rey is an expert pilot, a master martial artist, a top spaceship mechanic, and within five seconds of finding out that the Force exists ascends to the level of Jedi Master. She's also hot, smart, brave, and all the other good things. She needs neither assistance nor instruction. Character growth is unnecessary and impossible. Her only struggle is getting people to admit her natural perfect awesomeness. And even this comes easily to her.
