@_154831 a mom whose kid is raised by someone else 50%+ of their waking hours is not a full-time mother. you can argue that this is fine if you so please, but you can’t argue that this is full-time.

@bungarsargon That a majority of med students are female is not evidence that they do not receive the kind of message sandberg writes about.

Sandberg writes, “A woman who applies to medical school or pursues a demanding career is still met with, ‘Are you sure you want to do that—don’t you want kids one day?’” Really? The majority of medical school students now are women—for the seventh year straight! Apparently, whatever mythic character is saying this to women is having zero impact.
Batya Ungar-Sargon@bungarsargon

What's so funny about this is the tradwife movement is a women-led rejection of the guilt that very wealthy women like Sandberg inflicted on stay at home moms for not working or failing to rise far enough. For decades, liberal elite Girlboss feminism pushed professional success as essential to self-fulfillment for women, implying that women who worked part time or (Heaven forbid!) chose to be stay at home moms were somehow less than. Now that those women are pushing back, they must be defeated. My column: batyaus.substack.com/p/sheryl-sandb…

@ellieAPR @ProfHall1955 What about the Muslim woman who was attacked on an Ottawa bus and a man threatened to kill her a week prior to that supermarket attack? Where's her article in The Atlantic about pogroms against muslims?

Bear with me for a personal story that sheds light on this 'antisemitic hate crime' issue. Last year I was invited to deliver a lecture on state violence to a conference. I used Gaza as the main example. A Jewish woman confonted me in the refreshments queue. She accused me of selecting an inappropriate example. I replied that I'm against Netanyahu's regime and I hope you are too. She said nothing and returned to her seat. That was it. Nothing more. The following morning, the conference organiser rang to inform me that I had been reported to the regional police service as the perpetrator of an antisemitic hate crime. NFA, of course, but the incident has still been registered and the university informed. So it's on the statistics. How often is this happening? Genuine question, because I really don't know.

@Anthonysmdoyle @ProfHall1955 This is just another “but”, this time in the form of “Because one terrible thing is happening, I am self righteously justifying in ignoring or minimizing other bad things that are also happening.” It’s such an obvious pattern a more self aware person would be embarrassed by now.

@ellieAPR @ProfHall1955 Any violence is wrong. I'm not excusing any violence. But this argument is almost always made to pull discussion away from the violence Israel is perpetrating - focus on this attack, not on that genocide!

@Anthonysmdoyle @ProfHall1955 Your response is typical of anti-Semite apologists. First is: Where’s the grandma? I show you. Then is: the attacker was also a bigot against Muslims. So? He attacked a Jewish woman a primarily kosher grocery. There is always SOMETHING excusing violence against Jews.

@Anthonysmdoyle @ProfHall1955 Yes, that’s a convenient distinction without meaningful difference in that the vast majority of Jewish victims here in Canada are NOT Israelis. How us attacking Jewish schools, and Jewish mothers and grandmas just a matter of anti-Israeli sentiment?

@ellieAPR @ProfHall1955 Again - there IS real antisemitism but it is from the right, not from the left. Most of what is being pointed at is being anti-Israel, not antisemitic. When you go through any list of "antisemitic incidents", it is almost all anti-Israel incidents.

@E4maaa23 @ma1ybe A baby crying during a wedding ceremony is highly disruptive and parents who do not remove them immediately (banning terrible weather outside) are the pinnacle of selfishness.

@ma1ybe I'll play devil's advocate: If a baby crying 'ruins' the entire wedding, the priorities might be a bit skewed. That said, the guest staying in the room while it happened is definitely a choice. Just step outside.

@BanaVaderMemeCr @AlyssaLogic @wil_da_beast630 In the real world ppl understand that if you meet a relatively attractive, healthy and generally fun person aged 25 and over, you can assume that person has had a few sexual partners. It’s really not that big of a deal. The body count discourse is for online losers.

@emzanotti Disney cruises are really good. However they are a very different experience from the parks, so it depends what you’re looking for. But for an easy, virtually stress and planning free family vacation (particularly with little kids and grandparents), Disney cruises are great.

I am an unabashed Disney Parks lover, but even I have had to admit the parks are kind of a mess. There’s only so much nostalgia I have for, say, EPCOT, and at some point, the price just isn’t worth it anymore, especially when everything is an additional cost, and to maximize your stay, you need an actual degree in planning or hired help. But that’s just the *American* parks. Our plan, for next time, is to take a family trip to Japan and go to the parks there. The cost is the same. I’ve also heard really exceptional things about Disney cruises.
Sonny Bunch@SonnyBunch

@RobGeorge This is the thing: Disney Parks are, maybe, in a sneakily large amount of trouble because they’re losing the next generation due to ticket prices, lack of interest, etc. It’s a similar problem with movie theaters but papered over by all the Disney Adults still coming to parks.

@tallowqueen @Ahafia2 We didn’t plan on having kids so we built an entire wet bar in our basement. Now my 4 year plays RIGHT THERE, surrounded by all our nice whiskey, and a fully stocked wine fridge.

@Ahafia2 My parents were the same as i got older and i never took any either. My mom always had wine out too but only had a little. But I’ve seen full on mini bars in people’s houses right next to their dining table and it gets a lil crazy.

A step further on children shouldn’t see you drunk is that you shouldn’t have a ton of visible hard liquor in a house full of kids. I see that a lot and i think it’s lowkey insane.

@revenant_MMXX With kids 5 and under - yes. I say this as someone who thought like you. Even when I was pregnant i was envisioning me sipping coffee - maybe watching a “Master Class” while my baby napped or happily bounced in his chair. Boy was I wrong!

Not to say that kids aren't any work at all, it's not like a SAHM will just be sitting around all day. But is it eight hours of No Fun Allowed constant attention? Not at all and it's a lie to pretend like it is

@lymanstoneky Don’t hit your children.. If an adult hits a child, they adult is the assaulter, and the child is not an “spankee”, that child is an assault victim.

More kids I raise the more I realize how much unclarity there is around things parents say. Consider what is entailed by "spanking." I have seen a lot of people, both pro- and anti-spanking, suggest that spanking is a rushed strategy parents use because they can't/won't invest the time in other strategies of discipline. I used to think this was crazy; clearly people arguing this are insane, because spanking is actually extremely time-intensive. But increasingly it's just clear to me "what spanking is" and "how it happens" is just extremely variable. In my family, when a kid gets spanked (this is infrequent), the result is the spankee then wants to snuggle with the spanker, we discuss the situation with the child, we make sure they understand what happened and why... choosing to spank one of our kids is choosing to put a pretty hard stop to some of the then-ongoing activities. Right now a post-spanking spankee is playing in my office taking some time away from the victims of her most recent predations. But I've realized this isn't how everybody does it. A lot of families do basically "spank and run." Regardless of what is best, it's just striking that I think an observer of these two phenomena would see them as very different practices, yet in the parenting discourse we just say "spanking." For our family, if we are rushing and strapped for time, we wouldn't resort to spanking. We resort to bargaining or giving in. The least time-intensive solution to a child's problem is almost always the most verbal one, because you can talk while tying shoes or filling water bottles; or even less time intensive is just to give them whatever they want (not great parenting!). At least in our family; maybe other families experience this differently. Anyways, this is exhibit 475 in why we need clearer terms of discussion in the parenting wars.

@demiurgently I stopped breastfeeding around that time . Bottle feeding was such a relief. Honestly it feels like such a big decision at the time, but the baby phase is short. By the time your kids are little older, the breast va formula debate is frankly irrelevant.

everyone says babies are annoying but i was on an 8 hour international flight last night and someone had a cat in the cabin that meowed every 17 seconds. the babies went to sleep. not the cat.
Laura Loomer@LauraLoomer

Is there anything worse than a crying baby on a plane? I wish parents would control their children. It’s so disruptive. I refuse to believe a baby cries for 10 hours. At some point this is just bad parenting, right?

@ckirk47 @LauraLoomer Please don’t pretend for a second that you care about babies more than their parents do. But you know what helps babies brain develop?: the sun, sea air, playing in the sand discovering new textures, sounds and smells. Babies ARE NOT supposed to “lay low”.

@luxemiaa This is fair. I never let my kid kick the back of another passenger seat. If I get distracted and don’t notice, it’s ok if the passenger points it out.

This woman on Instagram said: I’m on a flight this kid is kicking the FAWK outta my seat. I calmly turned around looked at his parents and said one of you need to switch seats because I’m not going to tolerate 4 hours of your child kicking my seat and you NOT paying attention and properly parenting. BOOM the shock. The Dad said sorry and moved his child to the middle seat. Well played Pops. And yes, I realize I’m childfree in a childfilled world, but what I’m NOT gonna do is be inconvenienced by a lack of parenting.
