I've just read Of Mice and Men for the first time since high school and I'm going to be very woke for a moment because my reading of it has changed quite significantly since then. Yes, Lennie is just big and friendly and doesn't know his own strength and wouldn't hurt a fly etc etc but the whole plot - and audience sympathy - hinges on a physically intimidating, mentally disabled man repeatedly grabbing and holding onto women's clothes. Yes, we know he doesn't mean anything by it, he just wants to touch the purty clothing; but the women don't know that, and the audience is conditioned to sympathise with Lennie and not the women who are terrified by him. Curley's Wife doesn't even get a name, and she's a whore with red lipstick anyway. And it's not an isolated incident. Lennie did it at Weeds, which is what got him and George kicked out of there, and he did again to Curley's Wife. Now imagine that you're one of the women suddenly cornered by a hulking creature of a man who grabs you and doesn't let go and tells you how he loves your red dress, and there's nothing you can do to stop it. That's terrifying. That is where my locus of sympathy sits. Of Mice and Men is a complex book, but I find myself increasingly uncomfortable with the way the audience is conditioned to sympathise and associate with Lennie.

He said he didn’t know the Hour, only God knows. He ate, slept, prayed, and depended on God. That’s not perfection. That’s human. Perfection doesn’t get angry. Perfection doesn’t lack knowledge. Perfection doesn’t rely on another. So be real, are these the qualities of God or the signs of a man sent by God?

The UK is facing a hate crisis. Mosques are attacked and set on fire. Race riots march the streets beating people up. Sikh women are raped bc “they look Muslim”. Migrant hotels are burned. Hatzola ambulances are burned. Jews are stabbed. We need to come together and change this

Serious question for all Catholics. I want to understand this. It is in my estimation that we should be able to wear whatever we want to mass. Men should be able to wear cut offs, hats, flip flops, bathing suits, etc. Women can wear yoga pants, booty shorts, sports bras, tank tops, etc. If you don't think we should allow that, why? Do you think Christ would care that Clarissa shows up in booty shorts and a tank top? Heck we're just glad she's there for Christ. This is all acceptable attire in normal public. So why not mass? So if this is the case, then why should we care about modesty? Christ doesn't. If he did we'd make sure there is an enforced dress code. Why is modesty such a big thing in Catholicism? Christ meets us where we are. Does a place of worship need outward reverence, or just spiritual and internal reverence? I want a full logical layout of anyones argument as to why this photo should not be the norm in every mass. If you disagree with that premise then I expect a good logical argument that holds up against critique. But it seems to me based on all of the comments to Rachel's post that most Catholics agree you can dress this way for mass on any given sunday.

My 5 yo just ripped apart a bug for no reason. I told him we don’t kill things weaker than us for no reason. He didn’t seem to understand. Normal boy trait? How do I teach him to be gentle and respect all God’s creatures (except wasps and mosquitoes and such)?
