One more thing: realizing your most cynical views are indeed how academic science works will drive you crazy. You start to see how the economic moloch is internalized into the culture. You must remain positive, survive, and try to get to a point where you can change it.

People are dunking on the preprints-don't-count guy, but let's be honest: if he thinks that, other people on hiring, etc. committees think that. I think it's wrong and silly, but there is information there in how stuff operates.
