Exciting news from Dakar, Senegal The ANTENNA Project — Training Hubs for Statisticians and Epidemiologists across Eastern, Central & Western Africa — is officially launched, and I couldn't be more proud of what this represents. Africa's health challenges demand African solutions, and that starts with investing in the people who generate the evidence. ANTENNA is doing exactly that — building the next generation of statisticians and epidemiologists through training, mentorship, fellowship, and cross-country collaboration. Discussions focused on governance, curriculum development, AI and mathematical modelling, and practical learning opportunities to strengthen disease surveillance and public health research. When researchers, data scientists, and institutions work together across borders, we don't just produce knowledge — we change lives. #ANTENNAProject #HealthResearch #DataScience #Epidemiology #CapacityBuilding #PublicHealth #WestAfrica #APHRCResearch

The Training Hubs for Statisticians, Epidemiologists in Eastern, Central & Western Africa (ANTENNA) Project has officially been launched in Dakar, Senegal. The project brings together partners from Senegal, Cameroon, and Guinea-Bissau to strengthen health data and research capacity across East, Central, and West Africa. The project aims to develop the next generation of statisticians and epidemiologists through enhanced training, mentorship, fellowship opportunities, and cross-country collaboration. In his opening remarks, Head of Programs, Mat Lowe, PhD, highlighted the critical role of data and statistics in driving Africa’s sustainable development and prosperity. Dr Samba cor Sarr of Senegal’s Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene emphasized the need to strengthen human research capacity and build robust systems that translate scientific evidence into effective health policy. Discussions during the two-day convening focused on governance, curriculum development, the integration of AI and mathematical modelling, and practical learning opportunities to strengthen disease surveillance and public health research. ANTENNA is laying the foundation for a stronger regional network of researchers, data scientists, and institutions working together to generate evidence, inform policy, and improve health outcomes across Africa. #ANTENNAProject #HealthResearch #DataScience #Epidemiology #CapacityBuilding #PublicHealth #WestAfrica #APHRCResearch @IBusulwa , @agnes_kiragga , @CKyobutungi @DKadengye , @mirre02 , @_iswaema @isammygh , @ChristineGer22

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response, participants attended an informative session led by experts who shared insights on key areas critical to health security. Prof. Raphael Sangeda, Director of Continuing  Education  and Professional  Development , MUHAS discussed the importance of genetic epidemiology in disease surveillance and tracing transmission chains. He emphasized how genomic data can help scientists understand disease spread, identify emerging threats, and support timely public health interventions. Dr. Eblate Ernest Mjingo, Director General- Tanzania Wildlife Research  Institute ( TAWIRI) highlighted the role of wildlife–human interactions in the emergence of pandemics. He explained how diseases can spill over from animals to humans and stressed the importance of integrating wildlife surveillance evidence into preparedness and response systems. Dr.  Elibariki Mwakapeje, National Antimicrobial Resistance Expert, FAO  focused on the critical role of communities in preventing and responding to pandemics. He underscored the need for strong community engagement, participation, and awareness to enhance health security and ensure effective public health responses. #OneHealth #PandemicPreparedness #DiseaseSurveillance #GlobalHealthSecurity #HealthSecurity PublicHealth

Africa CDC has issued interim guidance to all @_AfricanUnion Member States to strengthen surveillance and cross-border preparedness for Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease. The guidance follows consultations with affected countries, public health experts and international partners, including discussions during the recent visit of H.E. Hadja Lahbib (@hadjalahbib), European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, to the Ebola-affected region. Africa CDC is calling for stronger exit screening at airports, seaports and land crossings; rapid reporting; clear referral pathways; infection prevention and control; and better coordination across borders. These measures protect communities, reduce the risk of further spread and help keep borders open through science-based public health action. Africa CDC will continue working with Member States, @WHO and all partners to strengthen preparedness and response, maintain trust and protect health security across Africa and beyond. africacdc.org/download/bundi… @EU_Commission
