But licensed Disney sheet music for Circle of Life / Nants’ Ingonyama glosses the opening line as “Here comes a lion, Father, Oh yes, it’s a lion!” That is not identical to Learnmore’s wording, but it is plainly in the same literal neighbourhood. At the same time, current reporting on the lawsuit says the official meaning being advanced in this dispute is the more elevated line, “All hail the king, we all bow in the presence of the king,” while also acknowledging that ingonyama can literally mean “lion,” even if Lebo M’s side argues that it functions here as a royal metaphor. That means this is not a simple fight between truth and falsehood. It is a fight between literal gloss and intended symbolic meaning. And context matters. We are talking about The Lion King, a Disney film built around lions, lion royalty, lion succession, lion imagery, and an African landscape stylised for global audiences. In that setting, a non-Zulu comedian hearing “there comes a lion” is not arriving at some absurd malicious distortion. He is hearing the chant through the surface logic of the film itself. That is why I think some of the moral outrage has overshot the facts. Here Lebo M frames the joke in much bigger terms, linking it to “Tarzan,” to reducing African language to “those silly Africans and their silly language,” and to a broader pattern of disrespect. He also says he has laughed at similar jokes before, but that this case is “significantly different.” So even on his own account, Learnmore did not uniquely invent this comic reading. He became the flashpoint Lebo M chose to confront. The 27 million dollars legal case is also big. Reporting says the lawsuit has claims including defamation per se, trade libel, misleading representation under the Lanham Act, and tortious interference with prospective economic advantage. The legal theory appears to be that Learnmore presented the meaning as fact, not just as a joke, and that this caused reputational and commercial harm. But from a language perspective, that still runs into the same problem: if the literal rendering is genuinely supportable, then this starts looking less like a fabricated falsehood and more like a dispute over which level of translation should govern public understanding. I could not verify strong evidence that “Nants’ingonyama bagithi Baba” was widely famous in public life apart from The Lion King itself, maybe South Africans can help me here. What does seem clear is that public recognition of this exact chant is overwhelmingly tied to Disney’s Lion King universe. Learnmore was not joking about some standalone civic or sacred phrase every African is expected to know on its own terms. He was joking about a line that most of the world first encountered through Disney spectacle.
